The Paupers

The Paupers

In 1967, the Canadian band The Paupers released their debut record, marking their entry into the music scene alongside fellow compatriots like the Guess Who during the British Invasion. The band began their journey in 1965, featuring a lineup that included Denny Gerrard (bass), Skip Prokop (drums), Bill Marion (guitar), and Chuck Beal (guitar). Prokop and Marion took on the songwriting responsibilities for their initial singles.

The Paupers crafted a sophisticated sound that blended roots music, blues, and folk-rock, reminiscent of early influences such as the Byrds and the Lovin’ Spoonful, coupled with elements from the Blues Project around 1965. They dedicated themselves to intense rehearsals, practicing up to 14 hours a day, which helped them refine their setlist and develop a reputation as one of the tightest bands in the area. Their performances in the vibrant Yorkville District of Canada drew large crowds, contributing to their growing popularity. There are even accounts of the Paupers outshining the renowned Jefferson Airplane during a performance.

In 1966 and 1967, Bill Marion departed from the group for reasons that remain unclear, leading to the recruitment of Adam Mitchell. With Mitchell (guitar and vocals) joining the ranks, he became a valuable songwriting collaborator for Prokop, and the band aimed to produce their debut album.

Their first record, *Magic People*, captures the essence of mid-60s music and is rooted in their folk-rock influences. The album features a trio of engaging psychedelic sunshine pop tracks: "Magic People," "It’s Your Mind," and "Think I Care," all characterized by Prokop’s distinctive drumming, innovative guitar effects, and impressive raga solos. While "One Rainy Day" stands out as a more upbeat Lovin’ Spoonful-style rocker, the remaining six tracks offer a mix of solid folk-rock that evokes the sounds of the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and the Beau Brummels. Notably, "You and Me" harkens back to the folk-rock vibe of 1965, while "Tudor Impressions" presents a reflective and abstract quality, enhanced by horns, shimmering acoustic guitars, and harmonies reminiscent of the Beach Boys. Additionally, "Black Thank You Package" and "My Love Hides From Your View" convey a compelling outsider perspective, with "Black Thank You Package" featuring an exciting introduction and catchy chorus, and "My Love Hides" being a haunting masterpiece of acid-folk.

Later that year, the band performed at the iconic Monterey Pop Festival, where they faced a series of mishaps, including overly potent doses of acid and technical difficulties with their equipment and sound checks. This tumultuous experience marked the beginning of challenges for The Paupers, who had initially shown great promise. Despite the internal strife, they managed to release one more album in 1968, titled *Ellis Island*, which is considered a mini psychedelic gem and remains highly recommended for fans of their work.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
