The Ink Spots

The Ink Spots

The Ink Spots were a renowned African-American vocal ensemble that rose to international prominence during the 1930s and 1940s. Celebrated for their interpretations of pop ballads, The Ink Spots achieved significant commercial success, amassing over 50 hits throughout their 17-year recording career. Their most successful single, "If I Didn't Care," sold over 19 million copies, making it the seventh best-selling single of all time. In 1954, Bill Kenny, the leader of the group, disbanded The Ink Spots, yet numerous spin-off or imposter groups have continued to perform and record under the name.

In 1967, the name "The Ink Spots" was declared to be in the public domain, allowing anyone to use it. For any imposter groups of uncertain origin, the designation The Ink Spots (2) should be utilized.

Original Ink Spots The group was founded in 1935 by members Orville Jones (bass), Deek Watson (tenor), Jerry Daniels (tenor), and Charlie Fuqua (baritone). In 1936, Jerry Daniels was succeeded by tenor Bill Kenny. By 1943, changes in the lineup occurred as Charlie Fuqua was replaced by baritone Bernie Mackey and Deek Watson by tenor Billy Bowen. Following the death of Orville Jones in 1944, Cliff Givens temporarily filled his position. In 1945, baritone Huey Long briefly took over for Mackey before Charlie Fuqua returned in October of that year, along with the introduction of Jim nabbie to the group. Later in 1945, Orville "Hoppy" Jones was replaced by bass singer Herb Kenny, who was Bill Kenny's twin brother. Herb Kenny was subsequently replaced by bass singer Adriel McDonald in 1951. In 1952, Charlie Fuqua was succeeded by R&B guitarist Everett Barksdale, while Teddy Williams (4) took over for Billy Bowen and was later replaced by Ernie Brown. Jimmy Cannady then replaced Everett Barksdale later that year.

In 1954, Henry Braswell replaced Ernie Brown, and Bill Kenny officially retired the group around July of that year.

Spin-offs In 1952, Charlie Fuqua left the original group to form his own vocal ensemble, also named "The Ink Spots," asserting that his group was the "original." Following Fuqua's death in 1971, his band leader Ray Richardson (2) established The Fabulous Inkspots.

Awards The Ink Spots received a Cashbox award in 1946 for making "The Gypsy" the highest-grossing song of that year. In 1948, they were honored with a plaque from the Negro Actors Guild for their contributions to combating racial prejudice. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 as influential artists, with the original members recognized including Bill Kenny, Charlie Fuqua, Deek Watson, and Hoppy Jones. Additionally, their 1939 recording of "If I Didn't Care" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame the same year. In 1999, they were further honored with induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
