The Escape Club

The Escape Club

The Escape Club was established in 1983 by lead singer and rhythm guitarist Trevor Steel, guitarist John Holliday, bassist Johnnie Christo (also known as John Christoforou), and drummer Milan Zekavica. The foundation for the band was laid when Zekavica joined Steel and Holliday, who were performing together in the band Mad Shadows. They later contributed to an album by the early 1980s new wave group Planning by Numbers, fronted by Stephen Milford.

As the lineup solidified with Christo's addition, The Escape Club emerged and quickly released their debut single, "Breathing." In 1985, the band signed with EMI and recorded their first album, White Fields, which came out the following year.

The Escape Club transitioned to Atlantic Records in 1987 to work on their next project, Wild Wild West. Released in the summer of 1988, the album featured the hit single "Wild, Wild West," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The accompanying music video received extensive airplay on MTV, though it was notably banned from British television for reasons that remain ambiguous.

In 1989, the band followed up with two more singles from Wild Wild West: "Shake for the Sheik," which peaked at No. 28, and "Walking Through Walls," which reached No. 81. They also released a cover of The Doors' "20th Century Fox" on The Wonder Years: Music From the Emmy Award-Winning Show & Its Era, which gained traction on MTV. This version was produced by Ray Manzarek, a member of The Doors.

The band recorded their final album, Dollars and Sex, in 1990, which was released in March 1991. The first single, "Call It Poison," did not enter the US Top 40. Following this, Atlantic Records released "I'll Be There," a song inspired by the death of a friend's wife that resonated deeply with listeners, becoming an anthem for those experiencing loss. The track reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved gold certification in the United States. The Escape Club disbanded in 1992.

Remarkably, The Escape Club stands as the only British band to score a No. 1 hit in the U.S. without charting at all in their home country. In 2005, they self-released a fourth album, Cloud 10.

In 2009, Trevor Steel and John Holliday reunited with new member Red Broad, leading to the self-release of a fifth studio album, Celebrity, in February 2012. The lineup was further solidified in 2019 with Johnnie Christo's return, allowing The Escape Club to perform as a full band for the first time in 25 years during the U.S. tour Lost 80s Live.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

International Buyers: We charge $7 for the first record and $2 a record thereafter for Domestic Shipping in the continental United States. This only includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States. Please carefully review the total shipping and VAT charges for your order before committing to a purchase, which will be different from what we are able to view or control on the US eBay site.
