Tangerine Dream

Tangerine Dream, founded by the late Edgar Froese, stands as a leading figure in the electronic rock music genre associated with the Berlin School. Emerging from the early "Krautrock" scene, the band transitioned from their "free-rock" origins to a synthesizer-driven trio that ultimately signed with Virgin Records. This German ensemble played a crucial role in popularizing synthesizer- and sequencer-based electronic music across much of the Western rock landscape. During their peak in the mid to late 1970s, the band's ethereal and rhythmic music garnered a devoted cult following. However, by the late 1970s, changes in line-ups and a shift towards a more conventional rock sound altered their musical direction. By the early 1980s, Tangerine Dream primarily focused on producing influential soundtracks, settling into a New Age style by the middle of the decade.

Formed in Berlin in 1967, the original lineup featured Edgar Froese, Conrad Schnitzler (cello), and Klaus Schulze (drums), with their debut release, *Electronic Meditation*, showcasing experimental improvisations influenced by London's psychedelic scene, infused with a unique Krautrock twist. Both Schnitzler and Schulze departed after this album, with Schulze later founding Ash Ra Tempel and becoming another key figure in the Berlin School. The second album, *Alpha Centauri*, introduced long-time member Christopher Franke, who replaced Schulze, while Peter Baumann joined for *Zeit*. The core trio of Froese, Franke, and Baumann signed with Virgin Records in 1973, and their subsequent release, *Phaedra*, solidified their signature style for years to come. Michael Hoenig temporarily filled in for Baumann during a 1975 Australian tour. Following Baumann's exit in 1978, Tangerine Dream explored new musical territories with *Cyclone*, which featured Steve Jolliffe on vocals and woodwinds, and Klaus Krüger on drums. Johannes Schmölling joined for *Tangram*, and this lineup remained stable until the mid-1980s. The band's increased focus on sequencers and rhythm during the early 1980s sparked division among fans, as later releases leaned towards more accessible, uplifting melodies.

After a brief period with Jive Records from 1984 to 1988, Tangerine Dream signed with Baumann's Private Music label and then with Miramar, embracing digital textures and moving away from their darker, psychedelic roots. Paul Haslinger replaced Schmölling in 1985, and Jerome Froese, Edgar's son, took over in 1990. Franke departed in 1987 due to creative differences with Froese. Following a transition to Edgar Froese's own TDI Music label, which was later rebranded as Eastgate, the band's image as a New Age act became less fitting. The Froeses began to experiment with contemporary sounds and revisited earlier elements, while the group's artistic direction largely remained rooted in melodic pop-rock, featuring a greater use of acoustic instruments, particularly in live performances.

After Edgar Froese's passing in 2015, the band continued to perform, albeit without any original members.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
