Starland Vocal Band

Starland Vocal Band

Starland Vocal Band emerged as a significant presence in American music during the Bicentennial summer of 1976, largely due to their iconic soft rock hit "Afternoon Delight." The band's origins trace back to the Washington, D.C., folk scene of the late 1960s, where future husband and wife duo Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert initially formed the acoustic group Fat City.

Danoff and Nivert crafted the song "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado," which was later recorded by John Denver and Mary Travers. They also collaborated with Denver on the well-known track "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Fat City released their debut album, Reincarnation, in 1969, followed by Welcome to Fat City in 1971, after which the duo began performing under the name Bill & Taffy, frequently opening for Denver during his tours.

In 1974, while working on their second album Aces, Bill & Taffy invited 18-year-old singer and pianist Jon Carroll to join them. Impressed by his talent, they decided to form a new ensemble, incorporating Carroll along with vocalist Margot Chapman to create the Starland Vocal Band. The group quickly signed with Denver's Windsong label, releasing their self-titled debut album in 1976. The single "Afternoon Delight" rapidly climbed the charts, earning the band five Grammy nominations, of which they won two, including Best New Artist. The song's immense popularity even led to the creation of their own short-lived CBS variety show, The Starland Vocal Band Show, which featured a young David Letterman.

The band's second album, Rear View Mirror, was released in 1977 but did not replicate the success of their debut. A year later, Late Nite Radio also struggled to achieve similar acclaim, and after their final minor chart entry "Loving You with My Eyes," the group disbanded following the release of their fourth album, 1980's 4 x 4. The dissolution of Starland Vocal Band coincided with the divorce of Danoff and Nivert, while Carroll and Chapman, who had married during the group's peak, also separated. All four members pursued solo careers afterward, yet none achieved the same level of success as they did with "Afternoon Delight." ~ Jason Ankeny

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
