Pointer Sisters

The Pointer Sisters are an American R&B vocal group hailing from Oakland, California, who rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s. Over their more than four-decade career, they have explored a wide range of musical styles, including pop, disco, jazz, electronic music, bebop, blues, soul, funk, dance, country, and rock. The group has earned three Grammy Awards and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. Between 1973 and 1985, they achieved 13 hits in the U.S. top 20.

The group's journey began in 1969 when sisters June and Bonnie Pointer started performing in clubs under the name "Pointers, a Pair." They later expanded to a trio with the addition of sister Anita Pointer. After signing with Atlantic Records, they released several singles that did not achieve commercial success. The lineup became a quartet in December 1972 when sister Ruth Pointer joined. Upon signing with Blue Thumb Records, they recorded their debut album and began to find success, winning a Grammy Award in 1975 for Best Country Vocal Performance for their song "Fairytale" (1974). Bonnie Pointer departed in 1978 to pursue a solo career, which met with only moderate success.

The group experienced their peak commercial success as a trio in the 1980s, featuring June, Ruth, and Anita. They won two additional Grammy Awards for their top 10 hits "Jump (for My Love)" (1984) and "Automatic" (1984). Other notable U.S. top 10 hits include "Fire" (1979), "He's So Shy" (1980), "Slow Hand" (1981), the remixed version of "I'm So Excited" (1984), and "Neutron Dance" (1985). June Pointer, the youngest sister, faced challenges with drug addiction throughout her career and left the group in April 2004. She passed away from extensive cancer in April 2006 at the age of 52. Following her departure, Ruth's daughter Issa Pointer joined the group. This new trio achieved a number two hit in Belgium in 2005 with their cover of "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves," featuring Belgian singer Natalia.

From 2009 until Anita Pointer's passing in 2022, the lineup included Anita, Ruth, Issa, and Ruth's granddaughter Sadako Pointer. Although all four women were part of the group, they primarily performed as a trio, adjusting the lineup as necessary. In December 2016, Billboard magazine recognized them as the 80th most successful dance artists of all time. A year later, they were ranked 93rd among the most successful Hot 100 artists of all time and 32nd among the most successful Hot 100 women artists of all time.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
