Petula Clark

Petula Clark, CBE, is an accomplished English singer, actress, and songwriter, born on 15 November 1932, in Ewell, Surrey, England.

Encouraged and guided by her father, Clark began her professional singing career at the tender age of seven, making her radio debut just two years later at nine. She quickly became a well-known voice on wartime radio and performed in concerts for troops. By the end of the 1940s, she had established herself as a prominent singing star and ventured into acting, appearing in numerous films of the era alongside notable actors such as Peter Ustinov, Anthony Newley, and Alec Guinness.

Clark's recording journey began with Rank promo 78s in 1949, followed by her first commercial release, “House In The Sky” / “Put Your Shoes On Lucy,” for Columbia in the same year. She signed her first major recording contract with Polygon Records in 1950 and achieved her initial chart success in 1954 with “The Little Shoemaker,” which was also released on 45 and 78 in the United States. Her chart success continued in the U.K. from the 1950s through the early 1970s, featuring two number one hits: “Sailor” and “This Is My Song.” In 1988, a remix of “Downtown” brought her back to the UK Top 10.

Clark made her mark on the European music scene in 1957 with “With All My Heart,” which reached the upper echelons of the Dutch and Belgian charts. That same year, she achieved her first French-language hit with “Histoire d'un amour.” She married a Frenchman on 8 June 1961 and was already recognized as one of France's leading female singers. Throughout the 1960s, she enjoyed significant success in France with hits including “Romeo,” “Ya ya twist,” “Coeur blessé,” “Chariot,” “Que fait tu là Petula,” and “C’est ma chanson.”

In 1962, the German-language song “Monsieur” topped the German charts and earned gold record status. Clark also achieved chart-topping success in Italy and Spain with songs in their respective languages.

Her breakthrough in the United States came in 1965 with the release of “Downtown,” which reached number one and won her two Grammy Awards. She won a subsequent Grammy for the follow-up hit “I Know A Place” and, in 1966, became the first British female singer to achieve two number one hits on the American charts with “My Love.” She was recognized as Top Female Singer by Cashbox music trade magazine in 1966 and again by Playboy magazine in 1968. Over a span of three years, Clark secured 15 entries in the American Top 40.

Clark has continued to record and tour globally. In 2012, her song “Cut Copy Me” entered the Belgian pop charts, and a dance remix gained traction on club charts across Europe. She returned to the British album charts in 2013 with “Lost In You” and again in 2016 with “From Now On.” Her French-Canadian album “Vu d’ici” peaked at #39 on the iTunes daily national chart in Canada in 2018. In 2019, a greatest hits album made its way onto the physical album and sales chart in the U.K., marking seventy years since her first record release.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

International Buyers: We charge $7 for the first record and $2 a record thereafter for Domestic Shipping in the continental United States. This only includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States. Please carefully review the total shipping and VAT charges for your order before committing to a purchase, which will be different from what we are able to view or control on the US eBay site.
