Musical Youth
Musical Youth are often remembered as a child novelty act, but this perception does not do justice to their musical abilities. The group was formed in Birmingham in the early 1980s by Freddie Waite, who had previously played with The Techniques, initially as his backing band. The ensemble showcased their talent in local pubs, with guitarist Kelvin Waite making his debut at just seven years old. In 1982, they signed with MCA Records, which stipulated that they needed to add a lead singer who was "of their own age." This led to Dennis Seaton joining the Waite brothers and Michael Grant.
Their first single with MCA, "Pass The Dutchie," was a rendition of The Mighty Diamonds' classic "Pass The Kouchie," with the references to marijuana removed. This track became a massive global success, making them the first black act to feature on MTV, preceding Michael Jackson by several months.
The group enjoyed a brief period of fame, collaborating with artists like Donna Summer and appearing alongside Irene Cara. They toured internationally and released their debut album, "Youth of Today," which was well-received. However, the band's efforts to blend serious reggae with a youthful sound began to falter, exemplified by the single "Never Gonna Give You Up," which featured the B-side theme from "Jim'll Fix It."
Their second album, "Different Style," failed to achieve commercial success, leading to the band's disbandment amidst family pressures, disputes, exploitative intermediaries, and legal issues. Michael Grant remained active in the music industry as part of 5am, while Junior Waite and Kelvin Grant reportedly faced mental health challenges. Tragically, Patrick Waite passed away at the age of 24 due to a heart condition while awaiting trial on drug charges.

- Records are packaged with a poly outer sleeve, the LP is placed in a fresh white inner sleeve directly after cleaning, (we include the accompanying sleeve, we send you both), separate from the cover to protect the seams during shipment, and of course, shipped within thick cardboard insert pads in a thick cardboard record mailer.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:
SEALED/Mint:
Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.
Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.
NM (Near Mint):
Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.
EX (Excellent):
Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.
Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.
VG+ (Very Good Plus):
Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.
Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.
Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.
VG (Very Good):
Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, plays with persistent noise but no skips.
Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.
Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.
G+ (Good Plus):
Vinyl: Many marks, somehow plays without skipping despite significant noise.
Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, possible large seam splits.
G (Good):
Vinyl: Copious marks, probably has a skip or jump but no guarantees.
Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits.
F (Fair):
Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip
Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
