Margie Day

Margie Day

Margaret Hoeffler (April 6, 1926 – September 18, 2014), known professionally as Margie Day, was a prominent Rhythm & Blues vocalist from Norfolk, Virginia, who gained recognition in the late 1940s. In 1950, she joined the Griffin Brothers Orchestra as their female vocalist, quickly achieving chart success with the lively track "Street Walking Daddy." By January 1951, as her popularity soared on the West Coast, Dot Records released her follow-up single featuring "Little Red Rooster" alongside "Blues All Alone."

In early 1952, Margie recorded "I'm Gonna Jump In The River" and "Stormy Night" on Dot # 1104, collaborating with the Griffin Brothers Combo. However, by September of that year, she chose to leave the Griffin Brothers Band and subsequently joined Floyd Dixon & His Combo. Later that year, she recorded her first solo record for Dot, titled "Midnight" and "My Story," released on DOT 1144. In 1953, she remained a featured vocalist with Dixon's combo, performing alongside DJ Hal Jackson in a weekend show in Washington, D.C.

In early September 1953, Margie Day ended her lengthy association with Dot Records and signed with Decca. The following October, Decca Records made a notable commitment to the R&B genre, highlighting Margie Day's new release, "Snatching It Back" and "Do I Look Like A Fool To You" on # 28872. She also performed at a significant event at the Mosque Theater in Newark, NJ, alongside notable artists such as Fats Domino, Amos Milburn, and Ruth Brown.

In the spring of 1954, Margie embarked on a series of performances in Texas and the Southwest with the Paul Williams band, Amos Milburn, and Charles Brown. In early 1955, Decca released "Old Time Lovin'" and "I Like What You're Doing." After a brief hiatus for motherhood in early 1956, she toured with The Turbans, Guitar Slim, and Roy Gaines in a show produced by Joel Turnero. Later that spring, she left Decca Records to sign with Syd Nathan in Cincinnati for King-Federal-DeLuxe, releasing her first record on DeLuxe # 6096 titled "Something Told Me" and "Dumplin Dumplin."

After a stint with Legrand Records in Norfolk, Virginia, Margie Day retired from the music business after more than a decade. She made a short-lived return in the late 1960s, performing in a modern jazz vocal style, but soon retired again due to health issues.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
