Mac Davis

Mac Davis

Mac Davis was a notable American country and pop singer, songwriter, and actor, born on January 21, 1942, in Lubbock, Texas. He passed away on September 29, 2020, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Davis is perhaps best known for penning some of Elvis Presley's greatest hits, including "In The Ghetto," which he wrote under the pseudonym Scott Davis, using his son’s name to avoid confusion with another songwriter. He also contributed to "A Little Less Conversation." In addition to his work with Presley, Davis was a prolific songwriter for various artists, including Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, and Bobby Goldsboro.

After graduating from Lubbock High School, Davis pursued higher education at Emory University and Georgia State College. During this time, he formed his own rock band and performed at clubs in Atlanta, releasing singles such as "Honey Love" in 1963 under the Vee-Jay label, where he also served as a regional manager. He gained recognition in the music industry primarily as a songwriter, achieving significant success with several songs recorded by Elvis Presley, including "A Little Less Conversation" (1968, co-written with Billy Strange), "In the Ghetto" (1969), and "Memories" (1969, also co-written with Billy Strange).

Davis transitioned to a successful solo career after signing with Columbia Records, earning a gold record for "Baby, Don't Get Hooked On Me" in 1972, which reached number one on the charts. He also enjoyed further Top 20 hits with "One Hell of a Woman," "Stop and Smell the Roses," and "Rock N' Roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life)," all released in 1974. From 1974 to 1976, he hosted his own television show, "The Mac Davis Show," and appeared in several films, including "North Dallas Forty" in 1979, as well as various television programs.

In recognition of his contributions to music, Davis received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 1998 and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000. He was later inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006. His life came to an end due to heart-related issues.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
