Kathy McCord

Kathleen "Kathy" McCord (February 18, 1952 – October 28, 2015) was an American singer and musician known for her contributions to the music scene in the 1970s.

Born to Bill and Ann McCord, Kathy arrived under the sign of Aquarius. Both of her parents had careers in show business; her father was a radio and television announcer at NBC, while her mother was a singer who provided backup vocals on Perry Como's television show and featured on hit records such as "Catch a Falling Star," "Round and Round," and "Magic Moments." Kathy's education took place at Sacred Heart School and Woodlands High School in New York, where she developed interests in painting, poetry, and singing. By the age of ten, she had already begun to excel in talent competitions, winning a contest at the Colonial Inn in Miami with her rendition of "School Days." Her musical influences included Motown artists, Dusty Springfield, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, and Aretha Franklin, among others.

At the age of 16, Kathy was introduced to songwriter Chip Taylor by her brother, Billy Vera. Taylor penned two songs for her, "I'll Give My Heart to You" and "I'll Never Be Alone Again," which were released on the Rainy Day label; however, they failed to achieve commercial success. A year later, McCord's talent caught the attention of manager Murri Barber, who recommended her to producer Creed Taylor. Taylor, who was in the process of establishing CTI Records, chose Kathy as his first artist. This collaboration resulted in her debut album, Kathy McCord (CTI 1001), and the single "Take Away This Pain" (CTI 502). Unfortunately, business challenges emerged between Taylor and the McCords, and shortly thereafter, Al Schwartz, the former manager of Billy Vera, introduced Kathy to singer Austin Grasmere. Together, they recorded some demos, but ultimately, these sessions did not lead to further opportunities.

Promoter Michael Lang played a crucial role in McCord's career by facilitating the recording of sixteen tracks in Woodstock, New York. Although these tracks remained unreleased at the time, they have since been rediscovered and included in the compilation New Jersey to Woodstock. While she did not produce any additional notable recordings, Kathy continued her music career by providing background vocals for saxophonist David Sanborn, his brother, and others. By the late 1970s, she had relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where she recorded more demos with singer Diane Scanlon before returning to Hartsdale to join a local cover band. After a decade filled with disappointments and limited collaborations, she moved to Florida in 1987, expressing her frustration with the music industry. "It was a great fun, a grand journey," she reflected, "but I just got tired." In her later years, she returned to her passion for painting.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
