John McLaughlin

John McLaughlin, a prominent British guitarist, songwriter, and artist, was born on January 4, 1942, in Kirk Sandall, Yorkshire. Not to be confused with the British pop songwriter of the same name, McLaughlin became a household name in the early 1970s as a fusion guitarist and the leader of the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

He began his journey with the guitar at the age of 11, drawing inspiration from blues and swing musicians. In the 1960s, McLaughlin collaborated with notable artists such as David Bowie, Alexis Korner, Graham Bond, and Ginger Baker, and spent six months playing free jazz with Gunter Hampel. His debut album, "My Goal's Beyond," released in 1969, received critical acclaim, followed by work with the Dawn label alongside John Surman, a quintet effort featuring Larry Young on the album "The Inner Mounting Flame" (1970), and a mix of acoustic solos and jams with Indian musicians on "The Meeting of the Spirits" (1971).

In 1969, McLaughlin relocated to New York to join Tony Williams' Lifetime and contributed to two seminal Miles Davis albums: "In a Silent Way" (1969) and "Bitches Brew" (1970). The following year, he founded the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a groundbreaking ensemble that, while often categorized as rock, incorporated intricate jazz improvisations. The group released three influential albums—"The Inner Mounting Flame" (1971), "Birds of Fire" (1973), and "Between Nothingness and Eternity" (1973)—before disbanding in late 1973.

In a notable collaboration with Carlos Santana, McLaughlin recorded a spiritually infused album influenced by John Coltrane. He reformed the Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1974, which included violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, but this iteration did not achieve the same success and disbanded by 1975. Subsequently, McLaughlin made a significant artistic shift to acoustic guitar, focusing on Indian music with his ensemble Shakti, which left a lasting mark on the emerging world music scene over three years.

McLaughlin continued to oscillate between electric and acoustic guitar, leading The One Truth Band, performing in trios with Al DiMeola and Paco De Lucia, appearing on several mid-1980s Miles Davis recordings, and forming a brief third version of the Mahavishnu Orchestra with saxophonist Bill Evans. He also recorded a reflective tribute to pianist Bill Evans and, in 1993, toured with a dynamic jazz trio featuring Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Dennis Chambers.

Throughout his extensive career, McLaughlin has recorded as a leader for various labels, including Marmalade, Dawn, Douglas, CBS, Warner Brothers, and Verve.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
