Herbert von Karajan

Herbert von Karajan

Herbert von Karajan was an esteemed Austrian conductor, recognized as one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century music. He served as the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for an impressive 34 years.

Born on April 5, 1908, in Salzburg, Austria-Hungary (present-day Austria), he was the second son of surgeon Ernst von Karajan (1868-1951) and his wife, Marta (1881-1954). A child prodigy at the piano, Karajan began his formal musical education at the Mozarteum in Salzburg from 1916 to 1926. There, he studied piano under Franz Ledwinka, harmony with Franz Sauer, and composition with Bernhard Paumgartner, who recognized Karajan's exceptional talent and encouraged him to pursue conducting. After graduating from the conservatory in 1926, Karajan continued his studies at the Vienna Academy, where he studied piano with Josef Hofmann, and conducting with Alexander Wunderer and Franz Schalk. He made his conducting debut in Salzburg on January 22, 1929.

Karajan's political affiliations have been a subject of controversy. He joined the Nazi Party in 1933 and again in 1935, but remained reticent about his membership, leading to various interpretations of his motivations. Some accounts suggest he sought membership in 1933 due to the political climate, but his application was deemed invalid due to a lack of follow-up. His formal membership in 1935 has been interpreted by some as a career-driven decision, while others argue it was ideologically motivated. This aspect of his past remained contentious, as evidenced by an incident in 1955 when the music director of the Vienna State Opera publicly refused to shake his hand.

Following World War II, Karajan performed his first concert in Vienna on 1946 with the Vienna State Opera. However, he faced a ban on conducting imposed by the Soviet occupation authorities due to his Nazi Party membership. He made a discreet appearance at the Salzburg Festival that summer. On October 28, 1947, he conducted his first public concert after the ban was lifted, leading a performance of Brahms' "A German Requiem" with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde for a gramophone recording. In 1954, he succeeded Wilhelm Furtwängler as the director of the Berlin Philharmonic, where his meticulousness and deep understanding of orchestral dynamics contributed to the ensemble achieving high standards of perfectionism.

Herbert von Karajan passed away on July 16, 1989, in Anif, Austria, at the age of 81.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
