Frank De Vol

Frank De Vol

Frank De Vol was an American actor, musician, and bandleader, born on September 20, 1911, in Moundsville, West Virginia. He passed away on October 27, 1999, in Lafayette, California.

De Vol's early exposure to music came from his father, who led a "pit" orchestra at a local movie theater. He began composing music at the age of 12 and joined the musicians' union at 14. By 16, he was already working in his father's theater orchestra and creating professional-level arrangements. Initially, he played the violin and saxophone. After attending college, he joined Emerson Gill's orchestra in Ohio, traveling throughout the state before moving on to Horace Heidt's band, where he not only performed but also arranged music. Later, he toured with Alvino Rey's band.

In 1943, De Vol relocated to California and established his own band, making appearances on KHJ radio and providing musical accompaniment for various radio shows, including those hosted by Jack Carson and Jack Smith. With the rise of television, he transitioned to working on programs such as The Betty White Show (1958) and The Dinah Shore Chevy Show (1956).

During the 1950s, De Vol made a significant mark in film composition, creating scores for 50 movies. He also composed music for several television series, including Family Affair (1966), The Smith Family (1971), My Three Sons (1960), and The Brady Bunch (1969). His work as a composer earned him four Academy Award nominations for the films Pillow Talk (1959), Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), Cat Ballou (1965), and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967). The success of his recording of "Nature Boy" for Capitol Records led to his appointment as West Coast Director of Popular Artists and Repertoire at Columbia Records in 1957.

Frank De Vol was married to Helen O'Connell, a notable big-band vocalist and a member of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame.

He is associated with ASCAP under IPI# 32263319.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

International Buyers: We charge $7 for the first record and $2 a record thereafter for Domestic Shipping in the continental United States. This only includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States. Please carefully review the total shipping and VAT charges for your order before committing to a purchase, which will be different from what we are able to view or control on the US eBay site.
