Fats Waller

Fats Waller

American jazz pianist, organist, composer, and comedic entertainer Thomas Wright Waller, known as Fats Waller, was born on May 21, 1904, in Harlem, New York. He passed away on December 15, 1943, from bronchial pneumonia while traveling on the Santa Fe Express near Kansas City, Missouri.

Waller emerged as one of the most celebrated jazz figures of his time. The youngest of four children, he was the son of Adaline Locket Waller and Reverend Edward Martin Waller. He began his musical journey at the age of six, initially learning piano before transitioning to the organ in his father's church four years later. By the age of fourteen, he was performing on the organ at Harlem's Lincoln Theater, and within a year, he had composed his first rag.

At just 18 years old, Waller recorded his first piano solos, "Muscle Shoals Blues" and "Birmingham Blues," in October 1922 for Race Records. He studied under stride pianist James P. Johnson, becoming both his prize pupil and a close colleague. Despite his father's opposition, Waller pursued a career as a professional pianist at the age of 15, entertaining audiences in cabarets and theaters. In 1918, he won a talent contest with his rendition of Johnson's "Carolina Shout," a piece he mastered by observing a player piano.

Waller's life came to an untimely end due to pneumonia during a cross-country train journey following a final recording session in Detroit with an interracial group that featured white trumpeter Don Hirleman. He was returning to Hollywood for additional film projects after the tremendous success of "Stormy Weather." Notably, as Waller's train stopped in Kansas City, so did a train carrying his close friend Louis Armstrong.

In recognition of his contributions to music, Thomas "Fats" Waller was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
