Eddy Duchin

Eddy Duchin

American jazz pianist and bandleader Eddy Duchin, whose first name is sometimes spelled "Eddie," was born on April 1, 1909, or April 10, 1910, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He passed away on February 9, 1951, in New York City, New York.

Duchin began his musical career in 1928, joining Leo Reisman's orchestra at New York's Central Park Casino, a prestigious venue known for its upscale clientele. Initially part of a duo with fellow pianist Nat Brandywynne, Duchin's flamboyant style and charming presence quickly elevated him to prominence within the group. By 1931, he had assumed leadership of the orchestra at the Casino, where his ten-piece ensemble performed nightly to enthusiastic crowds.

One of Duchin's signature techniques was crossing his hands while playing, often using just one finger to navigate the lower register. Despite his limited formal training, which sometimes frustrated his fellow musicians, his captivating stage presence compensated for any lack of technical polish. One sideman remarked, "He was the only musician I've ever known who could play a thirty-two bar solo with thirty-two mistakes and get an ovation for it afterwards."

In the late 1930s, Duchin adapted his sound, leading a new orchestra that gained popularity across North and South America. His 1938 recording of Louis Armstrong's "Ol' Man Mose" (Brunswick Records 8155), featuring vocals by Patricia Norman, sparked controversy due to a lyric that some listeners interpreted as vulgar. The debate over the lyric "bucket," which was heard by some as "fuck it," contributed to the record's rise to #2 on the Billboard charts, achieving sales of 170,000 copies—a remarkable feat at a time when 20,000 copies were considered a hit. The song was subsequently banned in Great Britain and later appeared on a British novelty compilation, Beat the Band to the Bar.

During World War II, Duchin served as a lieutenant in the Navy, with his military service focused on duties outside the realm of music. After the war, he formed a new orchestra that many critics regarded as his most musically sophisticated. However, by the late 1940s, Duchin's health began to decline due to leukemia, leading him to reduce his professional engagements. He died in 1951, and his life was later depicted in the 1956 film The Eddy Duchin Story, starring Tyrone Power in the titular role. Duchin's legacy continued through his son, Peter Duchin, who also became a pianist and society bandleader.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
