Don Gibson

American songwriter and country musician Don Gibson was born on April 3, 1928, in Shelby, North Carolina, and passed away on November 17, 2003, in Nashville, Tennessee. Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable artists such as Sue Thompson in the 1970s and Dottie West from 1969 to 1970. He was recognized with an IPI number of 00041484594.

In 1958, Gibson became a cast member of the Grand Ole Opry, marking a significant milestone in his career. His contributions to the music industry were honored with his induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1973, followed by his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.

As a solo artist, Gibson achieved considerable success, charting sixty-nine times in the U.S. from 1956 to 1984, with thirty-eight of those entries originating from songs he wrote or co-wrote. His most notable hits include "Sea of Heartbreak," which reached #2 on the country charts in 1961 and also charted at #21 overall and #14 in the U.K.; "Oh Lonesome Me," which peaked at #1 on the country charts in 1958 and reached #7 overall; and "Blue, Blue Day," another #1 country hit in 1958 that made it to #20 overall. Other significant singles include "Lonesome Number One," which hit #2 country and #59 overall in 1958, "Just One Time," which reached #2 country and #29 overall in 1960, and "Woman (Sensuous Woman)," which topped the country charts in 1969.

As a songwriter, Gibson charted eighty-eight times between 1955 and 1997, including six #1 hits. His most prominent songwriting achievement came with "I Can't Stop Loving You," performed by Ray Charles in 1962. This song topped the overall charts as well as the adult contemporary and R&B charts, and it also reached #1 in the U.K. It was later covered by Conway Twitty, who took it to #1 on the country charts in 1972. Additionally, Gibson's song "Sweet Dreams" charted thirteen times, with notable versions being Faron Young's #2 country hit in 1956 and Emmylou Harris's #1 country hit in 1976. "Oh, Lonesome Me" itself has charted eight times.

Between 1971 and 1979, Gibson also enjoyed success in duets with Sue Thompson, charting nine times, with their highest entry being "Good Old Fashioned Country Love," which peaked at #31 on the country charts in 1974. Furthermore, Gibson collaborated with Dottie West on four occasions between 1969 and 1970, with "Rings of Gold" achieving #2 on the country charts in 1969.

  • Record was initially cleaned manually, then ultrasonically cleaned with iSonic Ultrasonic Cleaning prior to grading
  • Records are packaged with a poly outer sleeve, the LP is placed in a fresh white inner sleeve directly after cleaning, (we include the accompanying sleeve, we send you both), separate from the cover to protect the seams during shipment, and of course, shipped within thick cardboard insert pads in a thick cardboard record mailer.
  • We offer discounted shipping on multiple records: calculated shipping for the first one and $2 for each additional one. International Buyers, please read International Buyers paragraph below.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

International Buyers: We charge $7 for the first record and $2 a record thereafter for Domestic Shipping in the continental United States. This only includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States. Please carefully review the total shipping and VAT charges for your order before committing to a purchase, which will be different from what we are able to view or control on the US eBay site.
