Crown Heights Affair

Crown Heights Affair

Crown Heights Affair is a notable American disco and funk band that originated in New York City during the early 1970s. The group was formed by bass player and later manager Donnie Linton, initially performing under the name The Nue Day Express. They eventually adopted their new name, inspired by a neighborhood in their hometown of Brooklyn.

The lineup of Crown Heights Affair originally included Donnie Linton (bass), Philip Thomas (vocals), William Anderson (guitar, vocals), Ray Rock (drums, percussion, vocals), James Baynard (trumpet, vocals), Stan Johnson (keyboards), Darryl Gibbs (saxophone), and Julius Dilligard Jr. (vocals). Arnold "Muki" Wilson later took over Linton's role on bass and vocals.

The group signed with RCA Records, where they released their self-titled album in 1974, achieving regional success with hits such as "Super Rod" and "Leave The Kids Alone." Following this period, several personnel changes occurred: brothers Bert Reid (tenor saxophone, vocals) and Raymond Reid (trombone, vocals) joined the band, replacing Darryl Gibbs and Julius Dilligard Jr., while Howie Young and Tyrone Demmons filled the spots of Stan Johnson and James Baynard, respectively.

With a revamped lineup, Crown Heights Affair moved to De-Lite Records, the label known for producing Kool & The Gang, and recorded their second studio album. Under the creative direction of producers and songwriters Freida Nerangis and Britt Britton, along with managers Thomas Nerangis and Donnie Linton, the band rose to prominence in the funk genre, delivering four successful R&B/pop singles from their initial two De-Lite albums: "Dreaming A Dream," "Every Beat Of My Heart," "Foxy Lady," and "Dancin'."

A global agreement between De-Lite Records and PolyGram Records, Inc. propelled the band into the international arena, with their single "Galaxy Of Love" reaching the UK Top 30 and "I'm Gonna Love You Forever" entering the Top 50 in 1978. By this time, James Baynard had returned to the lineup in place of Tyrone Demmons, and for the 1979 track "Dance Lady Dance," Skip Boardley was added to share lead vocals with Philip Thomas.

The influence of new producer Bert DeCoteaux and the band's developing songwriting skills solidified their standing in 1980, culminating in the hit "You Gave Me Love," which reached the UK Top 10. This single was part of the album "Sure Shot," recorded without keyboard player Howie Young. Despite this peak in chart success, Crown Heights Affair continued to produce singles and albums throughout the following decade.

Bert Reid left the group to pursue a career in production before the release of the 1982 album "Think Positive," which included the band's last significant US R&B hit, "Somebody Tell Me What To Do." In the early 1980s, his brother Raymond Reid and William Anderson gained recognition as sought-after producers under Donnie Linton Management, which ultimately resulted in their departure from Crown Heights Affair in 1986. Bert Reid passed away from lung cancer in December 2004.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
