Conway Twitty

Conway Twitty was an American country music icon who initially made his mark as a rock & roll singer. Born on September 1, 1933, in Friars Point, Mississippi, he transitioned from the rock scene of the 1950s to become the preeminent country superstar of the 1970s and 1980s, achieving an impressive total of 40 number one hits over two decades.

In 1957, he adopted the stage name Conway Twitty, inspired by Conway, Arkansas, and Twitty, Texas. With his deep, resonant voice, Twitty emerged as one of the most polished balladeers in Nashville during the country-pop era. He was also known for his innovative approach to music, successfully presenting country as a sophisticated genre. His songs often featured sexually suggestive lyrics delivered with sensitivity, steering clear of misogynistic themes. This unique blend contributed significantly to his widespread appeal and success.

After reaching the apex of the country charts in the late 1960s, Twitty maintained a dominant presence in the industry, consistently releasing Top Ten hits that both defined and expanded the boundaries of country-pop. His music incorporated elements of R&B, pop, and rock & roll, while he remained deeply rooted in country traditions. Despite occasionally having song titles that were perceived as corny, his charm and musicality allowed him to retain popularity until his passing on June 5, 1993, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 59.

Twitty's family includes his son Michael Twitty, daughters Joni Twitty and Kathy Twitty, and son Jimmy Twitty. In addition to his music career, he acted in films such as "Sexpot Goes To College" and "College Confidential." He also owned the Twitty City tourist complex in Hendersonville, Tennessee. In recognition of his contributions to music, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
