Commodores

The American funk soul band, renowned for their contributions in the 1970s and 1980s, originated at Tuskegee University in Alabama, where they formed as freshmen in 1968. They secured a contract with Motown in 1972, initially touring in support of The Jackson 5. Their recording career began in 1969 and continued until the early 1990s, during which they sold over 75 million records.

The band's commercial peak occurred in the late 1970s, marked by memorable ballads such as "Easy," "Still," and "Three Times a Lady," which also significantly influenced Lionel Richie’s solo career. They are widely recognized for their dance funk hits, including "Machine Gun," "Brick House," "The Bump," "Fancy Dancer," and "Too Hot Ta Trot." Much of their acclaimed work was produced by James Anthony Carmichael, their long-time producer.

In 1978, the group made a brief appearance in the disco film "Thank God It's Friday." Following Lionel Richie's departure to pursue a solo career, J.D. Nicholas from Heatwave stepped in to fill his role. The band received their first Grammy Award in 1985 for their tribute to Marvin Gaye titled "Nightshift." In 1982, Thomas McClary left the band, with Sheldon Reynolds taking his place. Additionally, Skyler Jett joined the group in 1983, replacing Richie for their world tour.

At the end of 2024, J.D. Nicholas announced his retirement, leading to a new lineup comprising William King, Cody Orange, Colin Orange, and Brent Carter.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Many marks, somehow plays without skipping despite significant noise.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, possible large seam splits.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious marks, probably has a skip or jump but no guarantees.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
