Buddy Morrow

Buddy Morrow was an esteemed American jazz trombonist and bandleader, born on February 8, 1919, in New Haven, Connecticut. He passed away at the age of 91 on September 27, 2010, in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Morrow's musical journey began when he won a scholarship to the Juilliard School in New York City; however, he left before completing his studies to pursue a professional career in music. Throughout his early years, he played with several prominent bands, including those led by Tommy Dorsey in 1938, Paul Whiteman in 1939, and Tony Pastor in 1940, as well as with Bob Crosby, Billy Butterfield, and Red McKenzie.

In 1951, Morrow established his own band, which achieved significant success with the release of "Night Train," a composition by Jimmy Forrest that became a major hit in 1952, selling over one million copies. Between 1951 and 1956, his orchestra charted six times on both the U.S. and U.K. charts. Notably, his highest-charting song, "Rose, Rose, I Love You," reached #8 in 1951, followed by "Night Train," which peaked at #27 in the U.S. and #14 in the U.K. the same year. Additionally, three other releases from his band made it into the top 20 in the U.S.

Morrow took on the role of bandleader in 1945, stepping in for Jimmy Dorsey, and from 1947 until 1968, he led the Buddy Morrow Orchestra. In the 1960s, he collaborated with Skitch Henderson and Doc Severinsen as part of the band for "The Tonight Show" when it was based in New York City. Morrow also conducted the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra for over three decades and served as the director of The Glenn Miller Orchestra after its peak popularity.

In the early 1970s, he formed a jazz quartet that performed in the Las Vegas and Los Angeles areas. Remarkably, he continued to perform on stage until just three days before his death.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

International Buyers: We charge $7 for the first record and $2 a record thereafter for Domestic Shipping in the continental United States. This only includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States.
