Arthur Rubinstein

Arthur Rubinstein

Born on January 28, 1887, in Łódź, and passing away on December 20, 1982, in Geneva, Artur Rubinstein was a distinguished Polish pianist of Jewish descent.

Rubinstein's illustrious career spanned over eight decades, during which he performed thousands of concerts across Europe, the United States, South America, Asia, Australia, North Africa, and Russia. Initially, he recorded for HMV/EMI before embarking on a prominent thirty-six-year collaboration with RCA, resulting in a vast catalog of recordings from 1928 to 1978. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest pianists in history.

He began his musical education at the tender age of three and enrolled at the Warsaw Conservatory by eight. The following year, he continued his studies with Heinrich Barth in Berlin. At just seven years old, Rubinstein made his first public appearance, and by the age of 13, he had already debuted in Europe, performing in Berlin. His American debut took place in 1906, when he played with the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. During World War I, he served as a military interpreter in London and had the opportunity to perform alongside the violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. Between 1916 and 1918, he toured Spain and South America, where he gained acclaim for introducing audiences to the works of Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz, and Enrique Granados.

In the 1920s, Rubinstein cultivated a reputation as a cosmopolitan socialite. However, his marriage to Aniela Młynarski in 1932 marked a turning point in his career. He began to critically assess his artistry, dedicating himself to music with renewed vigor, practicing 12 to 16 hours a day, and refining his already exceptional technique. After returning to the United States in 1937 for another performance at Carnegie Hall, he was celebrated as a genius. Throughout his career, Rubinstein maintained a formidable artistic reputation and boasted an extensive repertoire that included works by pivotal 18th- and 19th-century composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, as well as important 20th-century figures like Albéniz, Maurice Ravel, and Igor Stravinsky. He was particularly esteemed as a master interpreter of Chopin's compositions.

Relocating to the United States during World War II, Rubinstein was granted citizenship in 1946. Renowned for his witty personality and engaging storytelling, he was also a serious musician whose commanding stage presence enhanced his performances. Over his lifetime, he recorded more than 200 albums. In recognition of his contributions to music, Rubinstein was awarded the United States Medal of Freedom in 1976.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
