Warlord is an American heavy metal band that originated in 1980 and is based in Los Angeles, California. Founded by guitarist and songwriter William J. (Bill) Tsamis and drummer Mark S. Zonder, the band relocated from their hometown of San Jose to Los Angeles, where they began to develop a distinctive sound that would later be recognized as “Epic Power Metal.” Their unique style caught the attention of Brian Slagel, the founder of Metal Blade Records, who had recently released the compilation Metal Massacre, featuring emerging local metal artists like Malice, Steeler, Ratt, Slayer, and Metallica.
Slagel, a fan of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the Euro-metal aesthetic, was impressed by Warlord's semi-progressive style, which drew inspiration from a range of artists including Rainbow, Scorpions, and Jethro Tull. He offered the band a spot on his next compilation, leading to their vinyl debut with "Lucifer's Hammer" on 1982's Metal Massacre II. The track received positive reviews, prompting a second appearance with "Mrs. Victoria" on Metal Massacre III. Warlord subsequently signed with Metal Blade for their 1983 album Deliver Us, which garnered attention from significant publications such as Kerrang, Sounds, Burrn, and Music Connection, alongside regular FM radio play in major U.S. markets.
The band's mystique was further enhanced by their use of pseudonyms: Tsamis was known as 'Destroyer' / 'The Raven', Zonder as 'Thunderchild', vocalist Jack Rucker as 'Damien King', and keyboardist Diane Kornarens as 'Sentinel'. Warlord sought to distinguish themselves from typical LA club acts by presenting themselves on a larger scale. They rented The Raymond Theater for what became their only live performance in the U.S. until August 2013. This event was recorded and filmed for their first full-length release, "And The Cannons Of Destruction Have Begun...," which was issued in October 1984, accompanied by a VHS home video release of the same name (now available on DVD). The album included two new tracks, "Soliloquy" and "MCMLXXXIV," along with songs from the earlier "Lost And Lonely Days" / "Aliens" 12" single. Tsamis, Zonder, and Kornarens were joined by bassist Dave Watry, known as 'Archangel', and new vocalist Rick Cunningham, referred to as 'Damien King II'. A third vocalist, Rick Anderson, also known as "Damien King III," worked with the band in studio recordings but never performed live.
The rise of hair metal and rap music, combined with challenges in maintaining a consistent lineup that met Tsamis' and Zonder's standards, led to the band's disbandment in 1986. Metal Blade subsequently released "Thy Kingdom Come," a quasi Best-Of compilation, in December of that year, followed by an extended version including the entire Deliver Us album in 1989, titled "Best of Warlord." Unbeknownst to Tsamis and Zonder, Warlord began to develop a cult following in Europe, attributed to enthusiastic magazine reviews, ongoing radio play, and the circulation of demos through tape trading and word-of-mouth among metal fans. The advent of the internet further propelled Warlord's music globally, solidifying their place in heavy metal history as one of the genre's most significant bands, recognized for their artistic integrity and distinctive melodic style.
After 1986, Tsamis recorded an acoustic demo under the name “Lordian Winds,” part of a larger project inspired by John Milton's "Paradise Lost," which was released in 2012 by NoRemorse Records. He also formed a female-fronted band called Lordian Guard. Meanwhile, Zonder joined the progressive metal band Fates Warning, contributing to numerous albums and becoming a sought-after drummer due to his recognized talent.
During a Fates Warning tour, Zonder discovered that Warlord had gained substantial attention, with fans approaching him for autographs on Warlord albums and requesting new music. This led him to contact Tsamis, and as schedules aligned, Warlord resumed activity. Vocalist duties were taken on by Joacim Cans from Hammerfall, who was also a fan of the band. In 2002, they recorded and released the album "Rising Out Of The Ashes," which received positive acclaim and was followed by Warlord's first live performance at the Wacken Open Air festival.
However, a series of unfortunate events, including serious family health issues, led to another hiatus for Warlord, lasting nearly nine years. Once these issues were resolved and in response to mounting pressure from fans and promoters, Warlord officially returned to activity in March 2012 with the surprise release of "Night Of The Fury," their first new song in a decade. This track was initially shared on Warlord's fan club Facebook page, where it was announced that the band was working on a new album featuring Rick Anderson, one of the original 1980s vocalists. Philip Bynoe, currently with Steve Vai, joined the band on bass, resulting in the creation of the 55-minute album "The Holy Empire," which quickly sold out, leading to multiple re-pressings. The album was released on major digital platforms and as a limited collector's edition cassette that sold out within a day. A vinyl 2 LP version, including a live bonus track, was set for release in October 2013 by Alone Records.
As fan and promoter pressure intensified, Warlord announced their headlining performance at the April 2013 German "Keep It True XVI" Festival, followed by two sold-out shows in Thessaloniki and Athens, necessitating an additional sold-out performance in Athens. "The Holy Empire" garnered numerous positive reviews from international metal press and was featured in major publications as well as online outlets globally. In April 2013, Warlord graced the cover of the esteemed Greek Metal Hammer magazine.
Currently, Warlord is focused on their fifth, yet-to-be-titled full-length studio album and is overseeing the production of a Blu-Ray/DVD/Double CD combo recorded in HD during their Athens concerts. In September 2013, Tsamis and Zonder announced that Nicholas Leptos of Arrayan Path would take on lead vocalist duties for the band.
