Voltergeist began his journey in music with the release of his debut track, ""Earthen Spirit Loops"," on his own label, Microrave Records, in 2008. However, his musical endeavors date back to 1993, when he started creating music under various aliases. The spark for his creativity ignited after he received ProTracker sample sequencing software on the cover disk of Amiga Format magazine, leading him to produce music as Creations Of The Mind and distribute public domain diskettes featuring his work.
At the age of 17, Voltergeist received a Yamaha RY30 drum machine as a Christmas gift, which prompted him to record music under the name Listmaker. He manually synchronized the drum machine with non-MIDI software and performed live at student unions across Glasgow, earning a reputation as a reliable act willing to play at any event.
During this time, he invested his earnings and student loans into building a collection of hardware synthesizers, using his Amiga 1200 with Bars & Pipes MIDI software for sequencing. As his live performances grew in complexity, he collaborated with fellow Ayrshire electronic musician Galaxis Quench, together crafting extended sets that showcased their combined repertoire of electronic music.
In 2004, he briefly adopted the persona Mr Dimensional, becoming the cloak-wearing MS10-playing frontperson for the Glaswegian psychedelic fringe-folk band The Pendulums. This band eventually evolved into the critically acclaimed Trembling Bells, associated with Honest Jon's Records. The Pendulums featured guitarist Michael Hastings, who has performed with Mike Heron, a founding member of the Incredible String Band, and included electronic musician John "Frog Pocket" Wilson as an occasional fiddle player.
In 2008, Voltergeist and Emotiquon, the synth duo he formed with James "Mr Mechanoid" Rehill, supported the band Grand National at the Altitude Comedy Festival in Meribel. Following this, they launched Microrave Records to release ""Cut By The Brakes: Remixed"," after obtaining a license from Rob Da Bank's label, Sunday Best.
As Voltergeist, he has created dub techno remixes of tracks by various artists, including African folk musician Jali Bakary Konteh and the kuduro band Figura, both released on Akwaaba Music. He has also remixed UK indie band Grand National and bashment duo Heatwave. Many of his popular "white label" remixes for artists such as Audion, Booka Shade, Laurent Garnier, Major Lazer, and Gus Gus were initially available for free download on his Soundcloud page and can now be found on the free Voltergeist album, Geistpass.
Recently, Voltergeist collaborated with former Ministry bassist Paul Barker to produce an original track for a backstage documentary titled ""Fix"," which screened at various film festivals across the United States and is available as a limited edition DVD/CD/T-shirt package. An exclusive re-version of his track ""69 Psalmpled"" by Paul Barker is included in the bundled soundtrack album "Fix This," alongside contributions from artists such as Puscifer, Chris Connelly, Nivek Ogre, Alexis S.F. Marshall, Deadly Apples, and Jeffrey Kinart.
His distinctive sound has garnered support from influential DJs and tastemakers, including Dubfire, X-Press 2, Harri from SubClub Glasgow, Nick Warren of Way Out West, Dom Chung from Chibuku, Carlos Agueda, Silicone Soul, Jet Project, and Meat Katie.
Voltergeist is currently focused on developing new material, with plans to release it in 2014. Additionally, he is sharing archival recordings from his previous monikers through his DIY label, Flyin' Saucepan, where each monthly release is accompanied by bonus digital content and a unique recipe.
