Willy Viteka was born on 6 November 1949 in Madrid and passed away on 19 May 2020 at Hospital Uster in Switzerland. He was a prominent Swiss producer, songwriter, and music executive known for his significant contributions to the Swiss music industry, particularly in classical music production and publishing.
From an early age, Willy developed a passionate interest in the arts, pursuing studies in art, literature, and music with great determination. His extensive knowledge and network within the music industry stemmed from his work in key locations across the Western music scene, where he gained valuable experience. The 1970s were particularly formative for him as he worked as a studio musician, producer, author, and editor in London, an experience that profoundly influenced his career.
In 1976, Willy settled in Switzerland with his beloved wife, Olivia. Together, they founded Viteka Musik AG, a company that encompassed their own music labels and publishing houses. Despite his new home, Willy maintained strong ties to Spain, frequently engaging in production work in Mallorca, where he and Olivia established a second home and music studio.
Willy's entrepreneurial pursuits included not only his own music production but also serving as a sub-publisher in Switzerland, where he managed a diverse catalogue featuring works from notable artists such as Kylie Minogue, Milva, Rick Astley, Bananarama, Donna Summer, and Cliff Richard, among others.
A strong advocate for the Swiss music industry, Willy recognized the need for music publishers and producers to engage creatively and entrepreneurially while also advocating for a sustainable economic environment. He perceived a gap in representation for "production-oriented publishers" within existing associations in Switzerland and took the initiative to unite like-minded entrepreneurs. This endeavor led to the founding of the Swiss Association of Music Publishers (SVMV), which he presided over for 27 years. In recognition of his significant contributions, he was appointed honorary president in 2019. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Association of Swiss Music Producers (ASMP), which he also chaired concurrently with the SVMV.
Willy's commitment extended beyond the formation of industry associations; he actively participated in efforts to influence important bodies within the Swiss music industry, including various ad hoc commissions and legislative authorities. He placed a strong emphasis on mutual training and the development of young professionals in the sector, organizing educational events alongside association board members and with the support of Olivia as secretary. These efforts culminated in the annual music symposium in Fürigen, which became a key event on the music industry calendar.
In the 1980s, Willy was involved in the revision of copyright law, which led to the establishment of neighbouring rights and the founding of Swissperform, where he served as a delegate from its inception. He also contributed to the Expert Committee of Phono Producers and participated in copyright discussions with the Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI), helping to develop standard contracts for music publishers, sub-publishers, and producers.
Willy Viteka passed away at the age of 70 after being hospitalized due to an accident and subsequently contracting Covid-19. Although he recovered from the virus, he succumbed to pneumonia, a complication that arose during his convalescence.
Willy is remembered as a kind-hearted and warm individual, whose approachable demeanor and dedication fostered numerous friendships within the Swiss music industry and beyond.
