Vega, a male vocal quartet hailing from Detroit, is the latest R&B project from renowned producer Dallas Austin, signed to his Freeworld Entertainment label in partnership with Capitol Records. Their debut album, "Life On Earth," is scheduled for release on February 29.
The name Vega was suggested by Austin, as explained by group member Eugene Williams. He, along with his brother Ahsohn Williams, cousin Jason Chenevert, and school friend Tennell Williams, embraced the name due to its connection to the brightest star in the northern constellation Lyra. Eugene elaborates that the name resonates with their aspirations as artists from Detroit while also aligning with the album's futuristic theme.
This concept is reminiscent of the space-age inspirations found in George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic music from the 1970s, a deliberate marketing strategy by Austin. Eugene appreciates this approach, stating, “Dallas wanted to present us in a way that would stand us apart from other groups. It goes along with the theme of the millennium and gives us the chance to do characters.” He notes that performing as Vega allows him to step outside his reserved personality and embrace a more dynamic stage presence.
Vega was introduced to Austin by their manager and booking agent, Carlos Hatter, at a music industry convention in Atlanta. Impressed by their potential, Austin provided the group with a tape of unassigned backing tracks to develop. “He sent for us a month later, heard what we'd written, and told us to pack our stuff and come on down to live in Atlanta,” Eugene recalls.
Upon relocating to Atlanta, the group temporarily moved to Nashville to work on the album. Eugene explains that this shift allowed Austin to concentrate on the project without the distractions of his busy Atlanta schedule. With a clear vision for the album's sound, the group collaborated closely with producers such as Arnold Hennings, Tim and Bob, Rico Lumpkins, and Chuckie Charles to create a blend of uptempo tracks featuring futuristic sound effects and poignant ballads. Vega's music is published by Soundtron Tunes/V. Lyra Music (BMI).
One of the most personal songs on the album, titled "Heaven Needed You," was written by the group. Eugene shares that it deals with the theme of losing a girlfriend to death, a reflection of their own experiences with the loss of loved ones.
The album also features guest appearances from JT Money on "No Dough" and TLC's Chilli (Rozonda Thomas), who lends her vocals to the guitar-driven track "Spread My Wings." Vega is set to collaborate with Chilli again during a 13-city tour alongside the LaFace/Arista trio, kicking off on January 7 in Anaheim, California, and concluding on January 29 in Atlanta.
The first single from "Life On Earth," titled "Let Me Get It," was released a couple of months prior. David Linton, Capitol's senior VP of marketing and promotion, notes that although it did not achieve national breakout status, it received a positive response in the South and parts of the Midwest. The group aims to build on this momentum with their second single, "Mommie," releasing on February 1.
To enhance their visibility, Vega partnered with Sister 2 Sister magazine and the Thurgood Marshall Fund for a successful black college tour. Their strategy includes performances for radio stations and collaborations with EMI Music Distribution, Capitol's distributor. Advertising for Vega's album will appear in various black teen magazines, including Right On, Word Up, Black Beat, and Vibe, alongside editorial features in publications such as Honey, Upscale, J-14, Music Connection, and Behind the Scenes.
Promotional items, including futuristic pens designed as laser light replicas, will also be distributed to align with the innovative image crafted by Austin. Broadway Joe Booker, a programmer at KIPR in Little Rock, Arkansas, acknowledges the group's strong stage presence, suggesting it significantly contributes to their potential for success. Barry Beal, owner of Shantinique Records in Detroit, notes that Vega has been well-regarded in the Midwest prior to their deal and anticipates strong sales for their album following the interest generated by their first single.
