UB40 featuring Ali Campbell is a British reggae group that originated in 2008, initially performing under the name "Ali Campbell and The Dep Band" (also informally referred to as "Ali Campbell's UB40"). This formation followed the departure of lead vocalist Ali Campbell from the original UB40, a band he co-founded nearly three decades earlier. Shortly thereafter, keyboard player Micky Virtue also left UB40 to join Campbell's new venture.
In 2010, Matt Hoy became the band's vocalist. Following further changes, UB40's Astro departed from UB40 in November 2013, later joining Campbell’s group. By August 2014, they announced their new performance name: "UB40 featuring Ali, Astro & Mickey."
Micky Virtue exited the band in 2018, leading to a name change to "UB40 featuring Ali Campbell & Astro." Matt Hoy's departure followed in July 2021. Despite the name remaining associated with their 2022 album "Unprecedented," the band faced the loss of Astro, who passed away in November 2021. The current designation of the group is now "UB40 featuring Ali Campbell."
The band's lineup includes:
- Ali Campbell - lead vocals (2008-present)
- Yomi Babayem - percussion
- Jimmy Lynn - keyboards
Former members include:
- Micky Virtue - keyboards (2008-2018)
- Matt Hoy - vocals (2010-2021)
- Astro - vocals, percussion, trumpet (2014-2021)
Throughout their evolution, the band has adopted several names:
- Ali Campbell and The Dep Band (2008-2014)
- UB40 featuring Ali, Astro & Mickey (2014-2018)
- UB40 featuring Ali Campbell & Astro (2018-2022)
- UB40 featuring Ali Campbell (2022-present)
On January 24, 2008, it was announced that Campbell would be leaving UB40 after nearly 30 years as a key member, songwriter, and lead vocalist. His final performances with the band took place in February 2008 across Australia, New Zealand, and Uganda. Campbell later revealed that his departure was largely due to dissatisfaction with the business practices and management within UB40, prompting him to initiate an investigation into the band's financial affairs.
Following Campbell's exit, Micky Virtue also departed UB40, echoing similar concerns and joining Campbell's legal inquiry before becoming a member of The Dep Band.
In August 2014, Campbell rejoined former UB40 members Astro and Virtue to work on a new album titled "Silhouette." He publicly expressed his discontent regarding his brother Duncan's performances of his songs, stating, "I sat back for five years and watched my brother Duncan murdering my songs. We're saving the legacy." Their initial tour under the name "UB40 featuring Ali, Astro and Mickey" led to legal challenges from UB40. Their first project together, "The Hits of UB40 Live," was released in 2015, followed by the "Unplugged" album, which reached number 17 on the UK Albums Chart in 2016.
In March 2018, they released "A Real Labour of Love," which reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Following Virtue's departure in late 2018, the band continued under the name "UB40 featuring Ali Campbell and Astro." In July 2021, Matt Hoy left the group, and on November 6, 2021, the band announced Astro's passing after a short illness.
In 2022, they released the single "Sufferer," alongside Matt Hoy's solo single "We Are One." On June 17, 2022, the album "Unprecedented" was launched via UMC, with Campbell undertaking UB40 tour dates leading up to the album's release in memory of Astro.
