Adam Theis is a versatile American musician based in Oakland, California, known for his proficiency on a wide range of instruments, including trombone, trumpet, bass, guitar, keyboards, drums, percussion, and vocals. He is also a producer, bandleader, and composer who has actively contributed to the Bay Area music scene for over 25 years. In 2000, Theis co-founded Jazz Mafia, an innovative artist collective that brings together some of the most accomplished musicians across genres such as Electro, Hip-Hop, World, Classical, and Jazz. As the director of Jazz Mafia, he has curated more than 100 live projects over the past 16 years and has led or co-led numerous acclaimed ensembles, including The Shotgun Wedding Quintet (a Live/Hip-Hop crossover), Realistic Orchestra (a futuristic Big Band), Western Territory Project (a Classical/Jazz crossover), Subharmonic (an electro/jazz group), Brass Mafia (a Brass Band), and the 50-piece Jazz Mafia Symphony.
Theis and Jazz Mafia have established themselves as a premier choice for headliner talent seeking horn sections in the Bay Area, having supported a wide array of renowned touring artists both live and in the studio. Notable collaborations include performances and recordings with Carlos Santana, Bobby McFerrin, Roy Ayers, Booker T. Jones, Mickey Hart, Spearhead, Zigaboo Modeliste, Lyrics Born, Blackalicious, Zap Mama, Eric Lindell, Dead Winter Carpenters, KRS One, Chali2na, Liz Phair, Wax Tailor, Noel Gallagher, Big Freedia, The New Master Sounds, Peter Rowan, Ok Go, Rupa & The April Fishes, Coultrain, J Boogie’s Dubtronic Science, Spencer Day, The Velvet Teen, Mykah 9, and Lateef the Truth Speaker, among others.
In recent years, Adam has also contributed to co-writing and producing numerous recording projects, including albums by Lyrics Born, Ledisi, Latyrx, and Galactic. In February 2016, he inaugurated his recording studio with a project titled “30 New Tracks in 30 Days,” showcasing new music from various Jazz Mafia initiatives, all made available for free.
A significant turning point in Adam’s career occurred in 2008 when he received the Gerbode-Hewlett Foundation’s “Emerging Composer” Grant. This prestigious award enabled him to compose a one-hour suite of new music called “Brass, Bows & Beats,” featuring a 50-piece orchestra and seven vocalists, including Lyrics Born. The premiere in April 2009 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco sold out and garnered widespread acclaim, leading to numerous festival invitations across North America. To facilitate this, a grassroots fundraising campaign was launched, resulting in performances at major events such as the Newport, Playboy, Montreal, San Jose, and Monterey Jazz Festivals, as well as at Stern Grove in San Francisco, Grand Performances in Los Angeles, and Summer Stage in Central Park, New York. In 2011, Adam and the core composers from Jazz Mafia collaborated on the “Emperor Norton Suite,” which was also featured at these festivals.
In 2012, Adam founded The Treat Social Club, an offshoot of his passion for creative orchestral music. This underground music series in San Francisco is known for its intense collaboration, combining live performances with dancers, aerialists, acrobats, circus arts, live film scores, and various visual media, all supported by new compositions from Realistic Orchestra.
As an educator, Adam has dedicated himself to sharing his knowledge and passion for improvisation and jazz. He currently directs the SFJAZZ Monday Night Band and the Truckee Jazz Camp, now in its 11th year, and has implemented educational programs at Stern Grove and the Harlem School for the Arts. He has served as a featured artist-in-residence at several universities, including Dartmouth, Cal Poly, University of the Pacific/Brubeck Institute, Hayward State, Los Medanos College, and San Francisco State University.
