Robert & The Daisiez, commonly referred to as "RATD," were established in 1994 in Independence, Missouri, by Robert Greenwood (vocals, bass), Shane Hatfield (guitar, drum machine), and Mike Johnson (guitar), initially born from a sense of boredom. The trio's shared passion for music sustained them for the next two years, during which they recorded and released three albums: "Honey-Bran Muffins" (1994, Muffin Music/Gang Recordings), "Live In '95" (1995, UTR Records), and "Go Chicken Go!" (1996, Burning Circus Records).
In January 1997, the band parted ways with Johnson due to "creative differences," continuing as a duo for the following seven months. During this time, Greenwood and Hatfield compiled a "best-of" album titled "The Daisy Police: Car 69" (1997, Burning Circus), which featured their favorite past recordings along with a few new tracks. In July 1997, they welcomed Hatfield's brother, bassist Steve Williams, to complete the lineup.
With this new configuration—Greenwood (vocals), Hatfield (guitars, drum machine, keys), and Williams (bass)—the band released "Rock 'n' Roll G-Dogg" (1998, Burning Circus) and showcased their new material at the DAYFest Music Festival in August 1998. During this performance, they invited former member Johnson onstage, where he joined them for their signature song "Go Chicken Go!" marking the first and only occasion all four members performed together.
Later that year, RATD commemorated Johnson's return with a special album, "Penguins In The Smoke" (1998, Burning Circus), which included new music, some older tracks, and a remix.
The band disbanded in 2000, with the original lineup playing their final show in January. Although discussions of a reunion surfaced occasionally over the next few years, no activity occurred until late 2005 when Hatfield discovered old video footage of the band, filmed between 1996 and 1998 for an unrealized home video. This footage ultimately led to the completion of a documentary titled "Lucky 13," which was finished on July 13, 2007, in time to celebrate the band's 13th anniversary. A special screening took place on July 14, and the film was officially launched online on Christmas Day. Additionally, a career retrospective CD with the same title, "Lucky 13," was made available for free by UTR Records over Memorial Day weekend.
On December 12, 2009, RATD released a 10-track digital compilation called "Lost In The Smoke" on their MySpace page, showcasing their work with Burning Circus Records from 1996 to 1998. This collection highlighted tracks that exemplified the band at their peak.
The band released a love song EP, "A Trip To The Clinic," on September 6, 2011, featuring three tracks, including "The Swing," which was available for the first time. Following this, they unveiled a three-song EP titled "Cheap Drinks" on January 3, 2012, exclusively on their Bandcamp page. This release included a radio edit of "Huggy Bear," a Dr. Hugo remix of "Go Chicken Go!," and a new track, "Rock The House!"
A special summer single, "Paradise," was released on July 5, 2012, followed by the single "Hardcore From Main Street" on August 16, 2013. On October 22, 2013, the band issued a three-song Halloween-themed remix EP, "Demonized," which featured reimagined versions of classic tracks.
To mark their 20th anniversary, RATD released a new EP, "3 Hits From Heaven," on February 25, 2014. The lead track, "You're Not Cool," earned the band an OurStage.com "Top 40" award for reaching number 36 on the site's "Alternative" chart in April. The band also reissued their 1998 album, "Rock 'n' Roll G-Dogg," on September 16, 2014, both digitally and on a limited edition CD featuring new artwork and bonus tracks. They participated in Cassette Store Day 2014 on September 27, offering a special cassette titled "Back on Tape After 20 Years," limited to just 50 copies.
In February 2015, it was announced that RATD would be featured in a limited edition three-cassette compilation box set titled "400/100" on Denmark's Metaphysical Circuits label. This collection, released on June 12, 2015, included a new song by the band, "Radioactive Bitches (Teleported)," alongside 43 other international artists in a three-hour-long compilation that was also made available digitally.
