2014 Lineup: Oliver St John – all instruments, vocals, and percussion; Heather Carmen – vocals and percussion.
Musical Influences: The band's sound draws from a wide array of genres, including alternative, psychedelic, new wave, jazz, post-rock, flamenco, gypsy, classical romantic, and Indian classical music.
Childe Roland made its debut in 1988 with the album Discover an Evil Fetish, released as an audiotape by the indie label Trash City. Several of the album's 13 tracks featured Richard Chadwick, the current drummer for Hawkwind.
For the following year, the group performed as an acoustic duo until Oliver St John, the band's vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist, collaborated with upright bass player and cellist Frances Dorling. After recording a live session for BBC Radio Bristol, Chadwick departed to focus on his commitments with Hawkwind. The band experimented with various line-ups during this period, which led to the recording of another album, Diamond Highway, engineered by producer Chris Pink. In 1989, gypsy violinist Victoria joined the group, resulting in a fresh and eclectic musical direction.
The classic lineup of Childe Roland reached its zenith with the 1990 album Psychedelic Meadows, which was recorded live in a single afternoon using an impromptu studio set up by Tony Stephenson and producer Nick Batt. This album featured vocalist Jane Allison, who enhanced the performances with choreographed dance sketches. Shortly after this recording, Nick Batt, then a studio engineer at Moles in Bath, gained unexpected success with his DNA remix of Suzanne Vega's "Tom’s Diner."
The band did not seek to market themselves or their music as a commercial brand; rather, they viewed their work as musical surrealism, embodying a way of life and a state of consciousness. Creative freedom, imagination, and experimentation were fundamental to the band's identity. From its origins as an indie acoustic duo, their music evolved to transcend genre boundaries. The lyrics captured themes of punk excess, London squats, and a bohemian lifestyle, while also evoking nostalgic imagery of straw boaters and park picnics—all within the same song. Their sound combined psychedelic overtones, acid rock, mystical song-poems, modal melodies, and altered chords with elements of swing, gypsy jazz, flamenco, urban folk, Sibelius, and Lawrence of Arabia.
By 1991, various life events caused the band to gradually drift apart. Oliver St John dedicated himself to teaching, writing, studying, and exploring occult philosophy. During this time, he collaborated with indie artist and entrepreneur Andi Brooks under the name X-Machina. Between 2001 and 2002, St John studied harmony and composition at Bristol University while venturing into producing electronic scores (Virtual Music Orchestra) and creating an electronic album titled Scorpiotronic (French Poets). He also composed "The Star of Revealing," which set lyrics from the ancient Egyptian funeral stele of the priest Ankh af-na Khonsu. This piece was performed by baritone Niall Hoskyn and pianist John Pickard, recorded live at the Victoria Rooms in Bristol on January 12, 2002.
Meanwhile, Frances Dorling founded the Bristol-based band Tango Siempre in 1998 and later relocated to Holland in 2003. During a brief collaboration with Argentinian bandoneon player Damien Torres, she continued her music studies at the Rotterdam Conservatoire. There, she began performing with Cuarteto Rotterdam, a band dedicated to authentic Tango music.
The band's unconventional and surrealist approach to performance, songwriting, and composition persisted into the present. In 2007, Childe Roland was reformed, with Oliver St John working solo or alongside session musicians such as Catherine Hurley (flute) and Beth Porter (cello). Over three years, he toured the Westcountry of England, playing at numerous venues in Bristol and Bath. In 2008, he released Underground through indie label Rainfall Records. A notable performance occurred at the Bell Inn in Bath for the Fringe Festival, where the band delivered two captivating sets, one featuring a rock lineup and the other an acoustic arrangement. In 2010, St John relocated from Bath to St. Ives in Cornwall. A new Childe Roland album titled Dawn Till Dust, featuring the vocals of contemporary dancer Heather Carmen, is scheduled for release in 2014.
