Propaganda is a synth pop group that originated in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1982. The band was formed by Ralf Dörper, a former keyboard player for Die Krupps, and Andreas Thein. Their initial recordings took place in the summer of 1982 at a studio in Essen, Germany, notable for its PPG Synthesizer. Dörper and Thein produced two tracks, "Disziplin," which has political themes, and "Sünde," which addresses religious topics, featuring vocals by Susanne Freytag. The pair intended to release these songs through the London label, which had previously released Ralf's solo work in the UK. However, after sending the tracks to Chris Bohn at the NME, they caught the attention of producer Trevor Horn, leading to the band signing with ZTT Records in 1983.
Before being signed to ZTT, Propaganda, along with drummer Weet, traveled to London in February 1983 to record tracks with Nick Froome at a studio that would later be renamed Sarm West. This session was pivotal as Trevor Horn, Jill Sinclair, and Paul Morley sought to understand the essence of Propaganda before making a decision regarding a contract. During this session, they recorded demos for "Doppelganger," "Radetzky Marsch," and "Mabuse."
Throughout its history, Propaganda has experienced several lineup changes:
1984, ZTT ("Dr. Mabuse")
Claudia Brücken, Ralf Dörper, Susanne Freytag, Michael Mertens, Andreas Thein
1985, ZTT ("Duel," "A Secret Wish," "p:Machinery," "Wishful Thinking")
Claudia Brücken, Ralf Dörper, Susanne Freytag, Michael Mertens
Claudia Brücken departed from Propaganda in 1986, prompting the remaining members to pursue legal action to be released from their contract with ZTT. New album demos were created between 1987 and 1988, during which Mertens, Freytag, and Dörper collaborated with Derek Forbes and Brian McGee, alongside vocalist Betsi Miller. Although Freytag and Dörper contributed to the new album, they were not part of the group at the time of its release.
1990, Virgin ("Heaven Give Me Words," "1234," "Only One Word," "Your Wildlife")
Derek Forbes, Brian McGee, Michael Mertens, Betsi Miller
This lineup disbanded in 1991.
By 1998, Mertens was collaborating once more with Brücken and Freytag, and in 1999, Propaganda's website announced plans for a new album. This lineup intended to sign with EastWest, but the deal did not materialize, leaving the album unreleased, though some recordings emerged online. A few tracks were later included in Brücken's project Onetwo.
In 2004, Mertens, Freytag, Brücken, and Dörper reunited for a special performance of "Dr. Mabuse" to benefit The Prince's Trust and commemorate Trevor Horn's 25 years in the music industry.
2005+, Amontillado Music ("Valley Of The Machine Gods")

In 2011, Brücken held a live concert in London, during which she was joined by Dörper and Freytag. Around 2014, Mertens, Brücken, Freytag, and Dörper began collaborating on new material, but plans for a reunion faltered due to differing perspectives on live performances. In 2015, Propaganda (specifically Dörper and Mertens) contributed a remix of Holly Johnson's "Dancing with Fear."
Brücken and Freytag returned to the live circuit in 2018, performing concerts across Europe featuring Propaganda material under the name Duel. In the UK, they toured as X-Propaganda, performing alongside Paul Morley in 2018. With their name stylized as xPropaganda, the duo released a live version of Propaganda's "Secret Wish" album in 2018, followed by a new album of original material in 2022, produced by Stephen Lipson, who also worked with Propaganda in 1985.
In 2024, the other male members of the band emerged from obscurity, releasing three singles under the original name 'Propaganda,' with plans for an album to follow in winter 2024. Their new female singer is credited as a 'featured artist.'
