Premonition was a hardcore band hailing from Columbia, South Carolina, that was active during the early to mid-1990s. The lineup consisted of Bill Glover (vocals), Dan Houston (guitar), Garrett Grashius (guitar from 1992 to 1993, bass from 1993 to 1995), Tory Harris (bass from 1992 to 1993), and Jason Gambrell (drums).
The conception of Premonition took place in the fall of 1992, as University of South Carolina sophomores Bill and Dan, inspired by their shared passion for Youth Crew and New York Hardcore, decided to form a band that would make an impact. Initially, Bill could only play the intro to the Bold song "Clear" on bass, leading to the decision that he would take on vocal duties while Dan played guitar. Their plan initially included Dan’s roommate Jeff Cash as the second guitarist, but after meeting Tory Harris, an incoming freshman who played bass and shared their interest in NYHC, Jeff exited the group. Jason Gambrell, another incoming freshman and drummer who had a prior acquaintance with Dan, completed the lineup.
The band quickly secured a practice space in Lexington, just ten minutes from campus, and began writing songs. Their first show, alongside In/Humanity in Augusta, Georgia, did not go as planned, with forgotten riffs and broken equipment, but it provided valuable experience. They followed this with a second show at the practice space of the band Imp, which was much better received. This led to numerous performances with friends Assfactor 4 and the eventual addition of Garrett Grashius on guitar, enhancing the band's sound.
By spring 1993, Premonition recorded a demo tape at the Jam Room, which featured nine songs and sold out quickly. As the semester concluded, Bill and Tory returned to their respective home states—Arizona and New Jersey—for the summer. During this time, Dan, Garrett, and Jason practiced sporadically. Tory ultimately decided to leave to focus on another band, prompting the remaining members to shift Garrett to bass and continue as a four-piece.
During this transitional period, Premonition began to evolve musically, drawing inspiration from bands like Rights of Spring, Downcast, and Plaid Retina. Their songs became more complex and politically charged. When they reformed in fall 1993, they had already written half a set of new material and recorded a second four-song demo at the Jam Room. This demo included songs that would appear on a split 7" with In/Humanity, as well as one track for Gregg Bateman's Please Help 12" compilation and another intended for a 7" box set curated by Chris Murray of Assorted Pork Chops.
Throughout their active years, Premonition performed with various bands, including Stretch Arm Strong, Bone Machine, Minus One, Majority Rules, and Beldam Hour. In spring 1994, they recorded a third demo and prepared for a summer tour with Assfactor 4. A van secured by their friend Colonel Crust (previously known as Mike) was nearly lost when it broke down just before the tour. Fortunately, Garrett's father provided a replacement vehicle, allowing the tour to proceed successfully. The August 1994 tour was well-received, with notable shows in Seattle, Milwaukee, Richmond, Virginia, and Goleta, California.
Despite the success of the tour, Premonition began to lose momentum. Although they managed to record again in Atlanta with future Good Clean Fun frontman Issa Diao, the band remained largely inactive through most of 1995. Their final performance took place in May 1995 at Senseless Beauty in downtown Columbia, where they opened for Cornelius. This show marked only the second time Premonition headlined, providing a fitting conclusion to their journey.
In 1998, Premonition released their long-awaited 7" on Three Day Hero Records. Today, Bill resides in Arizona with his wife and two sons, continuing to play guitar in his band A Plague Called Man. Dan lives in Denver with his wife Amy, contributing on bass to the local straight edge band The Mutiny and playing guitar in The Diehard Remain. Jason has settled in Brooklyn, New York, where he plays guitar and sings in a roots/country band called I'll Be John Brown. Garrett lives in Atlanta and is set to perform at an upcoming Dade County Resistance reunion show.
