Pentagram is a prominent thrash/heavy/folk metal band hailing from Istanbul, Marmara, Turkey, founded in 1987. In 2001, the group released a single project under the name Mezarkabul (translated as "Grave Acceptance") for international audiences.
The band’s origins trace back to 1986 in Bursa, Turkey, where Hakan Utangaç (guitar) and Cenk Ünnü (drums) formed a musical partnership. They were soon joined by bassist Tarkan Gözübüyük, completing the lineup that would become legendary in the Turkish metal scene.
Within just three years, Pentagram garnered significant attention, performing frequently and evolving rapidly, which led them to sign with Nepa Music for their debut album. Their self-titled album emerged as a significant milestone for the Turkish metal landscape, rapidly establishing the band as a national sensation, accompanied by extensive media coverage and appearances on national television.
Pentagram's music, characterized by a blend of classic progressive rock and 1980s metal influences, set the stage for their future prominence as one of Turkey's most influential metal acts. Rather than resting on their laurels, the band moved quickly to record their next album, Trail Blazer, in 1992, this time partnering with Nuclear Blast in Germany, which expanded their reach to European audiences.
By 1996, their music had evolved to incorporate heavy metal with elements of Anatolian and Mesopotamian heritage, culminating in the acclaimed album Anatolia. Released under Raks Music, Anatolia marked a turning point for the band, followed closely by their first live album, Popçular Dışarı, in 1997, available in both CD and VHS formats. The album's distinctive style attracted a diverse fan base, earning recognition in fifty-two countries across five continents after signing with Century Media for global distribution.
Post-Anatolia, Pentagram transcended local popularity to become an internationally recognized metal band. Their subsequent albums, Unspoken and Bir, were recorded at Sierra Studios in Athens and released in Turkey through Universal Turkey.
In 2001, they entered into a partnership with Noise Records/Sanctuary to distribute "Unspoken" internationally. To differentiate themselves from other bands with the same name, they adopted "Mezarkabul" for this international release, although "Unspoken" remains the only album issued under that name; in Turkey, they continue to be known as Pentagram.
The band experienced a brief hiatus between 2003 and 2006, resuming activity when Sony Music Turkey compiled their complete catalogue. They celebrated their 20th anniversary with the release of their Bostancı Gösteri Merkezi show, 1987, on CD and DVD, before returning to the studio to produce MMXII in 2012, featuring Gökalp Ergen on vocals and Metin Türkcan on guitars. This album was recognized as the album of the year by readers of Headbang.
Over the years, Pentagram has shared stages with legendary bands such as Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Accept, Manowar, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Queensryche, Guns N' Roses, Alice in Chains, and Rammstein at major international festivals, including Sonisphere, Wacken, and Rock'n Coke.
Renowned for their intelligent and inspiring style, exceptional musicianship, and lasting influence on the rock scene in Turkey, Pentagram has become a unique phenomenon both domestically and internationally. Former members such as Demir Demirkan, Ogün Sanlısoy, and Murat İlkan have also made significant contributions to the genre, helping to elevate metal and rock music in Turkey.
