Scott and Dan began their exploration of noise and sound, heavily influenced by early industrial music, in the early 2000s, having first met around 2000 or 2001. At the time, Dan was a member of a noise rock band called The New Flesh, which he left in 2004 or 2005. Scott, on the other hand, was involved in a metal band named Vog from 2004 to 2006. Given that Scott resided in Northern Virginia and Dan lived in the Baltimore area, their collaborations were infrequent but aimed to occur at least monthly.
Scott was one of the founding members of Piasa, a harsh noise collective and performance art group based in DC/Northern Virginia that operated from 2004 to 2007, while Dan focused on his project Legless. In 2006, Scott launched his solo project, and as Pastures developed a sound they were pleased with, they teamed up with their longtime friend, Dave Litz, to record and release their debut cassette in 2007. This cassette was a split release with Children Egoism and was followed by the CDr 'Endtimes Feast' in 2008. After releasing the 'Blue Light District' CDr, the duo undertook a brief Southeastern US tour in the winter of 2007, with Scott also performing solo as Legless and Nuss. However, in 2008, Dave left the group for personal reasons.
In the winter of 2008, Scott and Dan recorded a split CDr with Consumer Destiny. Later that fall, they recorded 'Mercy Killing' and an unreleased epic track titled 'Lye,' which is set to be released in 2022. In early 2009, although Pastures had planned a longer Southeastern US tour, Scott was the only member able to participate. To avoid canceling, he utilized samples and loops of Dan's work, indicating that while physically absent, Dan was present sonically. Following Scott's move to North Carolina in 2009, collaboration became less frequent, although they managed to perform one live show together in North Carolina that year. Due to work commitments, Dan found it challenging to participate in shows organized by Scott in North Carolina and Richmond, leading Scott to continue using Dan's samples and loops during performances. This situation eventually caused confusion among audiences regarding the identities of Pastures and Nuss.
In response to this, Scott and Dan reached out to Mark Williams from Hickory, North Carolina, who had his own noise project called a.device.to.mimic.the.patient and was part of the experimental sludge/noise/metal band Smell The Rott. Between 2009 and 2010, Scott and Mark primarily collaborated as Pastures, with Dan making a guest appearance at one show in 2010. Scott relocated to Providence in 2011, and Dan later followed, marking the first time both members lived in the same city. They shared a practice space and recorded two releases, 'Crack Binge In Purgatory' and 'Excessive Deliverance,' which were mainly distributed at shows in North Carolina.
In late 2011, Scott joined a band called Akris from Northern Virginia, where he recorded with the late Steve Mackay, a saxophonist from The Stooges, and toured the southern United States. This decision was difficult for Scott, as it meant leaving Dan in Providence while he pursued this opportunity. Unable to sustain the cost of living in Northern Virginia, Scott returned to North Carolina. Tragically, Mark passed away in 2012, with his work documented on a cassette released by Smell The Stench.
While Dan and Scott maintained communication, it wasn't until 2014 that Scott traveled to Baltimore to record new material for Pastures. However, due to recording difficulties, nothing was released from that session. Between 2014 and 2017, both members focused on their solo projects, with no new material from Pastures. In 2019, Scott made another trip to Baltimore to record new material, which is scheduled for release in 2022. Unfortunately, Dan ceased communication with Scott in late 2019 after sending him two cassettes intended for overdubbing, one of which Dan believed was "already done," and which will comprise the second track on the forthcoming 2022 release. Despite their lack of communication, both members wish each other well.
After considerable reflection, Scott has chosen to continue Pastures, whether or not Dan decides to return. He believes that Mark would have wanted the project to persist. The sound of Pastures will continue to incorporate metal percussion while evolving in its noise aesthetic, with new themes open to interpretation. Scott is primarily focusing on his other projects, Nuss and a new endeavor called Astral Arsenal. The 2009 recording of 'Lye' will be released on CDr, along with a cassette from the 2019 session with Dan, an additional "recycled" cassette featuring previously recorded material by Scott, and one more new release.
Dan has historically been the member most involved in trading with other noise artists he admired. Although Scott managed Detournemont Media, he lacked a proper setup for distributing Pastures material. He aims to improve this aspect now with plans for a webstore selling cassettes and CDrs. Despite mixed feelings about self-promotion, Scott has not sent material to labels in the past; the only Pastures release outside of their own operations was on Smell The Stench. Before losing touch, Dan and Scott had agreed that making past releases available on Bandcamp was a reasonable approach for distribution. Scott encourages anyone interested in Pastures to reach out at nuss@protonmail.com for potential trades of available releases and a few t-shirts. While out of contact with Dan, Scott remains open to the possibility of future releases of his own Pastures material through other labels. Interested parties can contact him at the same email regarding upcoming releases. This biography will soon be updated with past and future releases not yet documented, a Bandcamp site, an official website, YouTube links, and more. Pastures appreciates the support shown by their listeners, both past and present, and Scott encourages everyone to support Dan's solo project, Legless, despite their current lack of communication.
