Dion Parson, a Grammy Award-winning drummer based in New York, was born on June 11, 1967, in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. His diverse musical background encompasses classical, reggae, calypso, jazz, African, and pop genres.
Initially starting with the trombone, Dion transitioned to drums at the age of 15. His talent was recognized early on when he received a grant from the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts to study at the Interlochen Music Academy in Michigan. Following his return, he was chosen as the Virgin Islands representative in the McDonald’s All-American High School Band, showcasing his skills on drums. In 1985, he enrolled at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he studied percussion under Keith Copeland and William Moersch, earning his Bachelor of Music in Music Education in 1990. In 1994, he began an 18-year mentorship with master drummer Michael Carvin.
After graduating, Dion moved to New York, where he quickly integrated into the jazz scene, performing with notable artists such as Milt Jackson, Monty Alexander, Jon Faddis, and many others. His collaborations with these musicians led to international tours across Asia, Europe, Canada, the West Indies, Africa, and the Middle East.
Dion's extensive recording experience includes work with major labels like Columbia, Sony, Gramavision, and Blue Note. His close association with fellow St. Thomas native Ron Blake resulted in the establishment of Tahmun Records, which released his first recordings as a bandleader, including "21st Century" (co-led with Ron Blake) and his debut solo album "People Music," released in 2001.
In 1998, Dion and Ron Blake co-founded the 21st Century Band, which Dion leads. This ensemble celebrates the music and talent of their heritage, blending traditional jazz harmonies with Caribbean rhythms to create what they describe as a "New Sound of the Caribbean."
In 2009, Dion had the opportunity to record a live CD at the prestigious Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, co-produced by Branford Marsalis. This project culminated in the 2010 release of "Dion Parson and 21st Century Band featuring Ron Blake and Terell Stafford, Live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola - Vol. 1."
In January 2006, he joined the Broadway production of "The Color Purple." His broad musical expertise made him an ideal fit for this show, which melds various styles, including gospel, pop, ragtime, and blues.
Deeply committed to nurturing future musical talent, Dion began teaching at Rutgers University as an adjunct professor in 1992. His teaching career expanded through workshops and classes at institutions such as Cheyney University, the VI Council on the Arts Jazz Exchange Workshops, and the Harlem School of the Arts, among others. Since February 2005, he has served as the drum and percussion instructor for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's Jazz for Teens program, as well as conducting clinics and private lessons at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
In 2009, Dion collaborated with the Virgin Islands Lottery to create the educational initiative "Mentoring Through The Arts of Music," aimed at recruiting and developing musical talent from the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Dion also took on the role of creative director for the international music organization United Jazz International, LLC, established in 2007 by Branford Marsalis and Steve Coleman, which focuses on musical residencies and projects globally.
