MUSIC PRODUCER/ENTERTAINMENT DIRECTOR
Daniel Merlot is a versatile songwriter, producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist currently based in Los Angeles, with a significant presence in Tokyo. His work spans music production for artists in Japan, Korea, China, and the United States.
Merlot began his career in San Francisco during the late 1990s, where he organized a series of successful trip hop and house dance events that featured prominent DJs, performance artists, and live music projects in which he participated.
After relocating to Los Angeles, he released dance records under the moniker Crash Berlin, collaborating with notable figures such as Bassnectar, drum and bass pioneers Aquasky, and hip hop icon Kool Keith. His discography also includes collaborations with Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction and reggae dub legend Mad Professor.
Daniel has consistently deejayed across the United States, performing at major music festivals including Lollapalooza, Burning Man, Coachella, and Ultra Music Festival in Miami. He has worked as a live music director for RedOne, Lady Gaga's producer, under the Universal Music record label. His tour experience includes opening for artists like Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, and Drake, as well as performing live on the David Letterman show and numerous other U.S. television programs.
In addition to his work in live music, Daniel has produced tracks for a variety of Hollywood films and television shows, including projects for MTV, Volkswagen, Anthony Bourdain, ABC TV Networks, and Modern Family. Notably, he scored music for the blockbuster film Marvel Comics' Blade: Trinity, starring Wesley Snipes and Jessica Biel, in collaboration with Kool Keith. This work was included on the official soundtrack alongside contributions from RZA and members of the Wu-Tang Clan, released by New Line Cinema.
Daniel also co-produced the launch of Vogue Magazine's fashion video series for Conde Nast. In Asia, he has produced chart-topping hits for China's leading pop artist Shang Wenjie over the past five years and has worked with the Korean girl group SPICA. His contributions to the Japanese pop scene have led to three #1 songs on the Oricon charts.
Additionally, he served as the music director for the Tokyo Girls Collection fashion festival in China for two years, staging events in Beijing and Shanghai. Daniel is also involved in launching dance festivals in China and establishing partnerships for Ultra Music China.
Operating from his studio in Hollywood, Daniel continues to produce music for a diverse array of international projects. He hosts events at his Hollywood space featuring artists from OWSLA, Skrillex, Apple Beats Radio, Diplo, Odesza, Rufus Du Sol, and One Ok Rock. Furthermore, he is the Head of Music Business Development for China and Japan at ASA Music LLC and Alliance Talent, which focuses on booking agencies for DJs and musicians.
EVENTS
Daniel's journey in live and DJ events began in San Francisco during the 1990s. He transitioned to working directly with Larry Harvey, the founder of Burning Man, producing and performing shows on the main stage. Over the years, he collaborated closely with Perry Farrell on the Lollapalooza, Enit Festival, and Coachella festivals, where he produced side performance stages and acts, also serving as the touring DJ for Jane's Addiction during their 2002 reunion tour.
When Lollapalooza relaunched in 2003, Daniel was appointed the main director for all side performance stages throughout the 35-city U.S. stadium tour, working alongside Perry to create a vibrant atmosphere for the festival. By the end of the tour, he had booked over 2,000 regional performers. Following this, he ventured into Japan, Korea, and China to produce and tour with Asian pop acts.
For two years, he was the music director for the Tokyo Girls Collection fashion festival in China, drawing audiences of over 10,000 at each show by featuring top models and pop acts from Japan and Korea. He also runs a talent booking agency in Los Angeles called Alliance Talent, which connects major celebrities, musicians, and talent with opportunities in Asia. He has successfully booked various artists, including Carly Rae Jepsen, Adam Lambert, Gigi Hadid, Victoria's Secret Angel Erin Heatherton, and Cody Simpson for events in China.
Daniel has shared the stage with a diverse array of artists such as Justice, Björk, Peaches, Jane's Addiction, Lil Jon, Kool Keith, Lee Scratch Perry, Crystal Castles, Black Ghosts, The Horrors, DJ Spooky, Freq Nasty, and Bassnectar, and has performed at the renowned Ultra Music Festival in Miami three times.
