Biography
The Longing occupies a distinctive space within the musical landscape, deftly navigating the realms of symphonic metal, progressive metal, and rock without succumbing to the confines of rigid genre definitions. This Los Angeles-based band, founded by musician, singer, and composer Laura Bradley, is known for its unique sound that resonates beyond conventional categorization. Their music strikes a balance between raw progressive metal and gritty rock, appealing to audiences both in the United States and internationally.
The five-piece ensemble comprises Bradley, who captivates listeners with her angelic vocals and compelling lyrical poetry, along with seasoned musicians: guitarists John Huldt and Mashadi Maximus, bassist Michael Wallace, and drummer Tom Plumb. Each member brings a wealth of experience, having honed their skills as session and touring musicians with notable production and engineering credits.
Meet the band:
Michael Wallace (bass): Hailing from Kewaunee, Wisconsin, Michael began playing bass at age 14. After joining his brother's band, 'Worlds,' he relocated to Los Angeles to reach larger audiences. He is the owner of When in Rome Studios, a state-of-the-art facility specializing in audio and film production.
John Huldt (guitar): Originally from Sweden, John has made Los Angeles his home since 2006. As an award-winning musician, he was named Guitar Player of the Year at the 2012 South Bay Music Awards. John is recognized for his versatility and has received acclaim from many industry peers. Prior to joining The Longing, he released two solo albums, both of which garnered critical praise.
Tom Plumb (drums): Tom began his drumming journey at age 10, eventually playing snare drum for the Concord Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. Outside of his work with The Longing, he dedicates time to teaching the next generation of musicians.
Mashadi Maximus (guitar): Mash has enjoyed a career as a touring musician since 2002, collaborating with artists from Asia, Canada, and the United States. In addition to his band work, he has been a session musician since 2009 and recently expanded his skills to include audio mastering. His company, Mashernator Audio, has engaged in exciting collaborations and audio production projects. He also crafts custom cables and is knowledgeable in sound system design and professional audio installations.
Laura Bradley (founding member and singer/songwriter): Born in Toronto and raised in Miami, Florida, Laura's diverse musical influences stem from her multicultural surroundings. She began singing as a child and became self-taught on piano and guitar in her early teens, ultimately earning a music scholarship for operatic voice. Balancing opera and rock music, she developed a multi-octave vocal range and exceptional control. The Longing benefits from her creative vision, combining engaging hooks, intricate guitar work, and layered rhythms that amplify her emotive vocals.
Laura has toured nationally as a solo artist, supporting her initial projects, ‘Rain’ and ‘Storm,’ which were distributed by eOne. She has opened for notable acts, including Colin Hay and Dionne Warwick & Friends at Miami's Bank United Center. Singles from her earlier works received airplay on multiple Clear Channel stations, and her track “Choosing You” featured in the season finale of MTV's ‘The Real World — Down Under in Sydney.’ Additionally, Laura co-composed the score for William Shakespeare's ‘The Tempest’ and performed the theme song, ‘Sword and Stone.’ Her track ‘Rain’ was included in the soundtrack for the feature film ‘Benny Bliss and the Disciples of Greatness,’ an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, while ‘Love Song’ served as the theme for the short film ‘Butterflies’ at Cannes in 2009.
With The Longing, the group has performed at various rock venues, showcasing a cohesive sound that energizes audiences. Music Connection Magazine reviewer Lisa Elaine Scott noted Laura's engaging performance style and praised her as "an accomplished composer and a sophisticated performer," highlighting the band's innovative approach to music.
The synergy among these talented musicians fosters a creative environment that captivates listeners. Their singles 'Wicked' and 'Frozen Ground' achieved significant airplay in the UK and 18 other countries, with 'Wicked' earning the title of UK record of the week. Their current album, “Tales of Torment,” has received attention in Prog Magazine and positive reviews from PureGrainAudio.com, Paste Magazine, and Noize Machine, among others. Their previous album, “Bleed,” reached #38 on the US iTunes Metal Sales Chart and garnered notable features and reviews across multiple platforms.
The Longing continues to engage audiences with a series of new singles, upcoming tour dates, and a fresh album release.
