Lori J. Ward is a notable figure in the electronic music scene, recognized for her work with labels such as Flavorite, PLatform B, Is This, Kaato, Sound of Acapulco, Neverending, and Caballero. Based in Toronto, Canada, Lori has garnered extensive support for her recent releases from prominent DJs and producers including Lützenkirchen, Alex Flatner, F.Sonic, Adam Jay, Harvey Mckay (Soma), Head Tunes, John Selway, Mastik Soul, Paco Osuna, Patric Lindsey, Sergio Mega, Stanny Franssen, Deko-ze, and Markus Wesen (Ohral, Blu-Fin). This backing underscores her success on a global scale over the past decade.
Lori began her electronic music journey in 1995 in her hometown of Victoria, where she performed at HIFI and held Monday night sessions at the Limit alongside DJ Koosh, who introduced her to the art of DJing. She was also influenced by established DJs such as Rennie Foster, Calvin Tang, The Mole, Tyger Dhula (Cobblestone Jazz), Noah Pred, and Jon Delerious, who became long-time friends and mentors. Within two years, Lori had performed across North America and made her way to London, where she held two residencies before spending six months as a resident DJ in a club in Luxembourg. It was during this period that she met Simmer from Shimmy Recordings, marking the beginning of her production career, with her first vinyl release occurring in 1999, followed by three more that same year.
In 1998, Lori relocated to New York City, immersing herself in the music industry through work and internships at LIFT, a prominent record promotion company. During this time, she gained valuable insights into music distribution, college radio promotion, and A&R, which equipped her to operate as a DIY artist. Since 1998, she has managed her own booking agency, initially called Futuretech Artists in New York City, which has since evolved into Flavorite Music—a label, booking, and management company, as well as the name of her monthly label parties across Europe. Lori is the driving force behind all these initiatives.
In addition to managing bookings for five key artists on her label and organizing events for up to 500 attendees in cities across Slovenia, Croatia, and Austria, Lori oversaw 19 releases comprising 67 tracks in the previous year. She also promoted her label, licensed her artists' tracks for various compilations, and organized three-week tours for her Canadian artists. Alongside these responsibilities, she produced and released music for her label as well as for the acclaimed Kaato Music from Bjorn Wilke and Neverending Recordings, driven by her passion for music and commitment to advancing the electronic music movement.
As she states, “I have given half of my life to music. After 16 years, there is no turning back. I take the ups with the downs, the good with the bad, and remember how lucky I am to have my passion as my job. It is sort of an addiction."
After moving to Graz in 2002, Lori partnered with Tobias Frick to form the musical duo Phonix, where she serves as the lead singer and co-producer. Tobi contributes exceptional artwork, graphic design, and video production for both Phonix and Flavorite Music. Together, they have achieved 15 releases and toured throughout Austria, earning a spot at number 37 in the top 100 year charts for Austria, along with numerous wins in various contests. They also had the opportunity to open for Moderat on the Electronic Beats stage.
Lori is recognized as one of the top female DJs globally and was among the first women to contribute to the burgeoning scene on the west coast of Canada. Her influence extends to her time spent in London, New York City, and Austria over the past decade. Known for her intensity, passion, and candid personality, Lori stands out as a vibrant performer. While she may appear energetic on stage, she describes herself as a quiet and somewhat shy person who enjoys solitude.
With plans for monthly releases in 2011, a new Phonix album, and a downtempo project with T. Orlando, alongside a full DJ schedule, Lori embraced a life-changing move to Toronto in June 2011. She looks forward to this new chapter and is excited to reconnect with long-time friends in the industry, including Deko-ze, who booked her early in her career, and Robb G, with whom she performed for New Year's Eve 2010 in Saskatoon. Proud of her Canadian roots, Lori is eager to return to her home country to continue her music career.
