Digital Horizons, an electronic music project based in Thetford, Norfolk, UK, was established in 1988 following the inspiration drawn from Tangerine Dream and the acquisition of a £130 mono Casio keyboard. Justin Ludford, born in 1973, is the founding and only member of the project, which has evolved from a bedroom studio culture into a more extensive musical endeavor over the years.
Ludford's journey began with a series of home-produced cassette recordings, and in 1994, the introduction of a PC facilitated the shift to digital recording, leading to the release of the first CDr, 'A Face In The Crowd,' in 2002. This release marked a new phase, coinciding with the purchase of new Yamaha equipment and a studio upgrade. The subsequent CDr 'Playback' was released in 2004.
In 2006, Digital Horizons launched a MySpace website, and projects during 2006 and 2007 included the delayed completion of the third album, 'Messenger,' which was released in February 2007. Additionally, Ludford began remastering older material, resulting in the first release of the 'DH Archives' series, 'Adjust Your Eyes To The Sun,' in July 2007, followed by the second volume in September 2007. The title 'Subsonic' became the best-selling release to date. Digital Horizons gained airplay on the internet radio station 'TDFZ' and its subsequent podcast.
The year concluded with the release of the first DH EP, 'Ions,' in December 2007. In 2008, the project celebrated its 20th anniversary with the release of a compilation album and EP. This year also saw the release of 'The Route Cause' CDr and the establishment of a new platform at www.reverbnation.com. October 2008 featured the release of the 'Dragonfly' EP.
In early 2009, Digital Horizons debuted on iTunes and Amazon MP3, starting with the 'Remembrance' CDr. July 2009 brought the release of 'ALT - DH Archives Vol 3,' continuing the exploration of Ludford's extensive catalog. The new equipment introduced in August 2009 was first showcased in the 'Undertow' EP released in October. The following year began with 'Over Seas,' the first full album from the updated studio, followed by an EP of the same name. The 'Capital' EP, inspired by London, was released in summer 2010, alongside the album 'White Skies.'
August 2010 saw the release of 'ana.lies,' marking the first DH title fully available for download on iTunes and Amazon MP3. The internet radio show 'Sunday Synth,' hosted by Bruce Gall at www.ARFM.co.uk, featured several DH tracks. In November 2010, 'ConSequence' was released as the 20th CD from Digital Horizons, with plans for an iTunes release in early 2011. Tracks became available on www.soundcloud.com for listener engagement.
In mid-2011, the fourth volume of the DH Archives series, 'Lost In The Landscape,' was released, which featured a more professional packaging approach and was available as a physical CD on Reverbnation. July 2011 introduced 'canopies,' a four-track EP, alongside a fan-only download track, 'Back To Shore.' November 2011 saw the release of 'Track and Field,' a ten-track album, while the DH Facebook page and Reverbnation profile continued to grow in popularity.
January 2012 marked the download-only release of the five-track 'neon' EP, which received airplay on the 'Sunday Synth' radio show. In March 2012, 'Foundations,' a compilation of tracks from 2009 to 2011 with two exclusive 2012 tracks, was released. May 2012 brought 'Time Machine,' a five-track EP available on CDBaby, Amazon, and iTunes, recorded after equipment upgrades in the studio. 'A Face From The Past,' an eight-track album, was released in August 2012, alongside a charity compilation featuring the DH track 'Falling Star' from the US site www.soundforgood.bandcamp.com.
The autumn of 2012 saw a twin release of the EPs 'Rising Star' and 'Falling Star,' and Digital Horizons joined Bandcamp in early 2013. The fifth volume of the DH Archives, 'Escapade,' was also released in early 2013, showcasing new sounds and artwork. A second charity compilation download from SoundForGood featured a DH track from the mid-2013 EP 'Reverberate.' July 2013 witnessed the release of the nine-track album 'Echo Catcher,' which included a track from a multi-artist compilation.
In 2014, the 'Ways and Means' EP was released, followed by the sixth installment of the DH Archives, 'The Last Cube In The Box,' which included a collaborative track with Ludford's girlfriend. The summer of 2014 brought the eleven-track album 'The Avian Flew,' and the 'Racing Rosetta' EP celebrated the mission to land a probe on a comet. The year concluded with 'Foundations2,' a compilation of recent tracks and a few exclusives.
2015 began with the passing of Edgar Froese from Tangerine Dream, a significant influence on Ludford's work. To commemorate this, the free download EP 'The Last Chord' was released, followed by the long-awaited 'Calendar' album, recorded throughout 2014. 'Winter's Window,' released in March 2015, featured the longest DH track to date, exceeding 30 minutes.
