Cloven Hoof is a heavy metal band hailing from Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England. The band played a significant role in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (N.W.O.B.H.M.) movement.
Originally active from 1979 until 1990, Cloven Hoof reformed in the early 2000s and has continued to perform since then. Throughout its history, the band has experienced numerous lineup changes, with founding bassist Lee Payne being the only constant member.
Biography
1979-1987
Cloven Hoof's initial years were marked by various lineup adjustments, including a brief period with vocalist Steve Sammon. Eventually, the band established a stable lineup that recorded their first few projects. Embracing a theatrical approach, the four members adopted pseudonyms representing the four elements: David "Water" Potter, Steve "Fire" Rounds, Lee "Air" Payne, and Kevin "Earth" Poutney. This lineup produced the successful 1982 demo tape, as well as The Opening Ritual EP and their self-titled debut album.
After the release of their debut, David Potter departed, and Rob Kendrick stepped in as the new "Water" vocalist. This lineup recorded the live album Fighting Back before disbanding shortly after its release, leaving Lee Payne as the sole remaining member.
1988-1990
In 1988, Lee Payne re-established Cloven Hoof, bringing in vocalist Russ North and guitarist Andy Wood from the now-defunct band Tredegar, along with drummer Jon Brown. With a fresh lineup, the band opted to abandon their stage names and proceeded to record two albums: Dominator in 1988 and A Sultan's Ransom in 1989. Shortly after these releases, former Sweet member Andy Scott joined as a second guitarist, but contractual issues ultimately led to the band's dissolution in 1990.
2001-2007
In the summer of 2001, Lee Payne began assembling a new lineup for Cloven Hoof following a call from Andy Wood regarding the earlier contractual problems that had contributed to the band's decade-long hiatus. After several years of effort, and despite being unable to reunite previous members, the band recorded Eye of the Sun, released in 2006. This album featured studio musicians Matt Moreton on vocals, Andy Shortland on guitars, and Lynch Radinsky on drums. According to Payne, this was the first Cloven Hoof album produced without the obstacles of the 1980s. However, he expressed a preference for Russ North's vocals over Moreton's.
Following the successful comeback album, the hired musicians departed when Russ North returned to the band after resolving the issues that had previously kept him from rejoining. The band's website reflected a brief period of lineup changes, including a short return of former member Jon Brown.
In time, the lineup stabilized with the addition of Mick Powell, a guitarist who had nearly joined Cloven Hoof in the early 1980s. Jon Brown also rejoined the group during this period.
2008
In early 2008, Cloven Hoof released a collection of re-recorded songs titled The Definitive Part One, with a new album, Throne of Damnation, planned for release in 2009. Although Mick Powell played guitar and keyboards on The Definitive Part One, he left the band before its release. Cloven Hoof continued as a four-piece for a few months before Powell briefly rejoined in April 2008, eventually being replaced by Christian Horton.
