Sarah Faith Griffiths, known professionally as Griff, is a British singer and songwriter born on 21 January 2001 to Chinese and Jamaican parents near Watford. She began her musical journey by borrowing her brother’s Logic software, teaching herself how to produce songs in secret from her classmates.
On 4 July 2019, Griff's signing to Warner Records was announced, coinciding with the release of her debut single "Mirror Talk," which was accompanied by a music video. The song received notable airplay on BBC Radio 1's New Name playlist, curated by Annie Mac. Griff revealed that the writing process took just an hour, and she considered the release a significant milestone, occurring right after she completed her A Level exams. Billboard characterized the track as an "electrifying debut," highlighting her "powerful voice and vulnerable lyrics." Following this, in August 2019, she released her second single, "Didn't Break It Enough," with a music video featuring clothing designed by Griff. In October 2019, she released "Paradise," leading up to her debut extended play, The Mirror Talk, which came out on 15 November 2019. In December 2019, she covered the Bangles' 1989 hit "Eternal Flame."
On 7 February 2020, Griff released the single "Good Stuff." Contrary to popular belief that it was about a romantic breakup, she clarified that the song reflects her feelings about missing children her family fostered, who felt like siblings to her. In March 2020, she co-wrote "I Love You's," which was released by American singer Hailee Steinfeld. Griff followed up with "Forgive Myself" on 29 May 2020, which was described by NME as an "anthem." In July 2020, she received a nomination for an Ivor Novello Rising Star Award from The Ivors Academy, and later that month, she released "Say It Again." In October 2020, she collaborated on two songs: "1,000,000 X Better" with English band Honne and "Inside Out" with German DJ Zedd.
In January 2021, she released "Black Hole," labeled a "dark pop anthem" by NME. On 19 March 2021, Griff won the Brit Award for Rising Star and performed "Black Hole" at the ceremony. She also announced her debut mixtape, One Foot in Front of the Other, which was released on 18 June 2021. Two months later, she released the single "One Night" and subsequently embarked on a UK tour to promote her mixtape, followed by European and North American dates.
In November 2021, Dua Lipa selected Griff as one of her three supporting acts for the European leg of the Future Nostalgia Tour in 2022. In September 2022, Griff performed on eight dates of Ed Sheeran's +–=÷× Tour. In 2023, she participated in the Music of the Spheres World Tour by Coldplay, opening for several European dates, including those in Portugal, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands.
After a break from music during the Future Nostalgia Tour, Griff released the single "Vertigo" in August 2023, which garnered promotion from Taylor Swift on Instagram, who expressed her admiration for the song. In October 2023, she released an EP titled Vert1go Vol. 1 to support the single. Later that month, Griff announced the upcoming release of her single "Astronaut," co-written with Coldplay’s lead vocalist Chris Martin, which was released in December. She followed this with the single "Miss Me Too" in February 2024 and an EP, ver2igo vol.2, in April 2024. On 12 July 2024, Griff released her debut album, Vertigo, which received generally positive reviews from critics. In November 2024, she released a new single titled "Last Night's Mascara."
Additionally, on 20 June 2024, Griff was announced as an opener for Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet Tour. She also opened for Taylor Swift on 22 June 2024 as part of the Eras Tour in London, alongside Paramore.
