Members: Forrest Bartosh – Drums, Chris Fogal – Guitar / Vocals, Johnny Wilson – Bass / Vocals
Origin: Denver, Colorado, United States
The Gamits originated in 1996 when friends Chris Fogal (guitar, vocals), Matt Van Leuven (bass, vocals), and Matt Martinez (drones, vocals) came together to form the band's initial lineup. This version released a 7″ EP titled Come Get Some on Drug Store Records, while performing primarily in local venues, showcasing songs from their debut EP along with tracks like "Run Along" and "Audrey's Davenport." During this time, Fogal also played guitar for the Denver punk band Pinhead Circus.
In 1997, the lineup evolved with the addition of drummer Forrest Bartosh, who had previously played in Pinhead Circus and the Ladonnas, leading Van Leuven to switch to bass. This configuration became the core of the group, producing the majority of the band's material over the following years. Their first release as this lineup was the EP This is My Boomstick on To the Left Records, featuring popular tracks such as "Run Along," "Willabe," "I Wish I Was Dumb," "Dead Like an Enemy," and "Broken In." Additionally, the EP included a cover of ABBA's "Take a Chance on Me," highlighting the band's vocal harmonies.
The Gamits subsequently recorded their debut full-length album, Endorsed by You, marking their first release with Suburban Home Records. The album contained several live favorites, including "Last of the Mullets," which has been a closing song at nearly every show since its release, alongside "Sorry Song," "All Wicked," "Guy in Club (Makes New Friend)," and "15 Minutes." To promote this album, the band undertook multiple tours across the United States, including a tour alongside the Teen Idols.
Their next release, A Small Price to Pay, would be the last featuring Bartosh and Van Leuven. This EP included live staples such as "Reset," "Beach Boy," "Don't Make Me Show You," "Spec," and "Bender." During the recording, they also captured the tracks "Rock Machine" and a cover of Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby," both of which later appeared on the Italian compilation album Rose Harbor Anthems. The band supported this release with a several-month U.S. tour alongside the Fairlanes.
In 2002, Van Leuven departed from the band and was briefly succeeded by Luke Mathers, who recorded one song, "Like White Noise," and accompanied the band on tours in Europe and the United States. The Gamits made their first trip to Japan to promote the Japanese-only compilation record Leaps and Bounds, which featured tracks from their earlier releases as well as "Like White Noise." Scott Weigel, formerly of The Fairlanes, filled in on bass during this tour.
In 2003, Scott Swarers and Jason Walker joined the band as bassist and drummer, respectively. This lineup recorded the full-length album Antidote, which had a slightly darker tone and included songs such as "Blood Stains / Picture Frames," "How to Escape," "Never Before Noon," and "Dotted Lines." A video was produced for "How to Escape." The band supported the album with tours in Japan, Europe, and the United States. In 2005, Fogal decided to conclude his performances with the Gamits, with their final show taking place at the Bluebird Theatre in Denver, Colorado.
In 2006, Suburban Home Records released a box set titled Golden Sometimes, which encompassed all official Gamits releases, a disc of rare songs and demos, and a live recording of the band's final performance.
In 2007, Fogal formed the metal band TaunTaun, which has released one album on Black and Bluhm Records and has performed regularly, including at SXSW in 2010.
In 2009, Fogal revived the Gamits, enlisting longtime drummer Forrest Bartosh and former touring bassist Scott Weigel. The band released Parts on September 7, 2010, accompanied by an interactive video for the single "This Shell," created by the award-winning Legwork. Parts was recorded at Fogal's new studio, Black in Bluhm.
In 2011, the same lineup undertook a brief tour in Japan and their inaugural tour of Russia and Ukraine, performing 11 shows from Ukraine to Moscow. Later that year, they released a split record on Paper and Plastick Records with label mates Red City Radio.
In 2012, the only official release was another split with The Murderburgers for the All In Vinyl series, featuring two new tracks from the Gamits. Toward the end of 2012, Scott Weigel was replaced by Johnny Wilson (Moral Crux, Thankless Dogs, The Gloryholes) on bass and backing vocals due to Weigel's family commitments. The Gamits continue to perform, with tours in Russia and Europe scheduled for 2013.
