SaxExtender | Nonlinear Behaviors Researcher | DIY Electronics | Improviser since 2003
Biography
Born in Salerno in 1981, Mario began his musical journey playing saxophone in traditional brass bands in Southern Italy. He relocated to Naples in 2000, where he earned a degree in Environmental Sciences. In 2002, he established the avant-punk band [A Spirale](http://www.discogs.com/artist/1746634-A-Spirale), which combines timbral exploration and extended techniques with a post-punk ethos. Alongside this project, he co-founded [Viande Records](http://www.viande.it).
In 2009, Mario teamed up with SEC_ from the Neapolitan experimental rock band Weltraum to form the duo Aspec(t). This collaboration blends SEC_'s tapes with Mario's explorations of feedback and the use of recycled or self-made materials. His work with sound ecology researcher Agostino Di Scipio, a faculty member at the Naples Conservatory, led to the release of "Up-Set" (Viande Records, 2010) and "Musical Sculptures & Other Devices" (DieSchachtel, 2011). During this period, his focus shifted from extensive saxophone techniques to the study of feedback through saxophone and DIY electronics, which included collaborations with artists such as Olivier Di Placido, Arnaud Riviere, Andy Bolus (Evil Moisture), Andy Guhl (VoiceCrack), Gaia Leandra, and Jean Bender. His research delves into the unstable and nonlinear behaviors produced by electronic systems and acoustic feedback.
Since 2014, Mario has initiated various groups that merge hip-hop-inspired beatmaking with radical improvisation and noise practices, collaborating with artists like DJsEKS (Genital Warts), Tom De Testa (Infected Burst, Formless To Come), Utku Tavil, Makumbo (Radon Squad), Uochi Toki, Abstral Compost, C_C, dj Die Soon, Walter Gross, and dj 2Phast.
Over time, he has adapted his saxophone setup to include various extensions such as cans, springs, strings, microphones, and motion sensors, depending on the context of his performances. His work spans across the United States, Europe, and Russia; in 2020, he collaborated with American percussionist Chris Cogburn, resulting in a release with Geneva-based Insubordination Records. In February 2020, he participated in the No-Idea Festival, an international event focused on improvised and experimental music, held in Austin, Texas.
Recently, Mario has pursued a project of reinterpreting the folk traditions of Southern Italy with the group Turcos Meet the Little Devils, collaborating with musicians from the folk scene, including Kalle Moberg, Kamilya Jubran, Maria Portugal, Loup Uberto, L'Ocelle Mare, Laura Cuomo, Tonino Taiuti, Teatro Deambulante, Begayer, Gianlorenzo Nardi, and Lucia Sole (La Festa Delle Rane).
His collaborative efforts extend across a diverse array of genres, engaging with musicians from experimental, noise, improvised, hip-hop, and folk backgrounds, including Agostino Di Scipio (Italy), Arnaud Riviere (France), Chris Cogburn (USA), Kamilya Jubran (Poland), Andy Guhl (Switzerland), Valerio Tricoli (Italy), Will Guthrie (Australia), Robbie Avenaim (Australia), Luca Venitucci (Italy), Burkhard Beins (Germany), Franz Loriot (Switzerland), Christof Erb (Switzerland), Sean Baxter (Australia), Olivier De Placido (France), Guy Sherwin & Lynn Loo (UK), Jack Wright (USA), Katsura Yamauchi (Japan), Ignaz Schick (Germany), Fabrizio Spera (Italy), Roberto Bellatalla (Italy), Maria Portugal (Brazil), Loup Uberto (France), L'Ocelle Mare (France), Violeta Garcia, Nadia Daou (Lebanon), Paed Conca (Lebanon), Camila Nebbia (Argentina), Jooklo Duo (Italy), Virginia Genta (Italy), Ken Vandermark (USA), Christof Kurzmann (Austria), Simon Rose (UK), Joss Turnbull (Germany), C_C (France), Dave Phillips (Switzerland), Evil Moisture (France), dj Die Soon (Japan), Utku Tavil (Turkey), CompanyFuck (S.
