Carolyn, originally from New England, has dedicated her life to playing and writing music. Reflecting on her early experiences, she notes, “Although I’d been dabbling in performance forever, I never really took it seriously or considered it my career. I used to play for the Cambridge May Balls and other events when I lived in Cambridge, England and always felt invigorated by the shows. It was frustrating not to have CDs or tapes when audience members asked to purchase my material.” In 1992, Carolyn and her Scottish husband, Doug, relocated to Seattle, WA. She began a Ph.D. program at the University of Washington but soon realized that graduate school felt more like a default choice than a true passion. This realization allowed her to focus entirely on music, embracing a pursuit she had long enjoyed.
With newfound dedication, Carolyn started crafting her own style of poetic and haunting music, sharing her work at open mics, where she received an enthusiastic response. Encouraged and financially supported by her Seattle friend, Karen Lebens, Carolyn embarked on her first CD, No Heroes, released in 1995. During the project, she discovered David Lange’s studio, where she recorded most of the album, marking the start of a fruitful collaborative relationship.
As she entered songs from No Heroes into various national songwriting competitions, Carolyn gained recognition as a finalist and received awards at events such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, Napa Valley Folk Festival, and the BMI Songwriter’s Showcase. These accolades paved the way for her to share stages with renowned artists like Cheryl Wheeler, Tom Rush, Ellis Paul, Celeste Krenz, and Dan Bern.
Her second CD, Standing Stones, released at the end of 1998, showcases her creative talents and songwriting prowess. This album garnered additional awards and resonated with fans, featuring songs that reflect her Celtic influences along with her personal heritage. Carolyn spent her junior year studying at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where she met her husband; the traditions and culture of Scotland have significantly shaped her life and music.
In 2004, Carolyn released her third album, Kiss of Ghosts, which earned her a spot as a finalist in the Kerrville Folk Festival Newfolk Competition, participation in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Troubadour Contest (where she won a new Martin guitar), and a performance at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Songwriting Showcase. Following her move from Seattle to Maine, she introduced her distinctive voice and style to a New England audience. Kiss of Ghosts received acclaim from critics, was recognized as one of the top independent releases of 2005 by Performing Songwriter Magazine, and won the 2005 People’s Choice Award at INATs East.
Despite the distance between Maine and Seattle, Carolyn returned to work with David Lange and her talented group of musicians, including Hanz Araki, Roberta Downey, Mark Ivster, Dan Mohler, Paul Elliott, and John Morton, to produce Waves of Silence, released by Nashville's High Horse Records. The album reached #14 on the Cashbox Magazine/Roots Music Report's Top 50, showcasing a range of songs that are both heartwarming and contemplative. Roberta Schwartz from Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange remarked, "Carolyn Currie is a revelation. She sings as if she is the lead vocalist of a heavenly choir -- soft and sweet, yet haunting and magical. Her finger-picking on six and twelve-string guitar frames the music and elevates it far beyond the ordinary singer/songwriter fare."
Carolyn's most recent CD, Echolocation, marks her first recording in Nashville and is produced by singer-songwriter Celeste Krenz. While maintaining the haunting and soothing qualities characteristic of her earlier works, Echolocation infuses a new energy into her music. The album soared to #2 on the Alternative Folk Music charts and has been met with critical acclaim. Carolyn won the 2014 Wildflower Music Festival Songwriting Contest and secured 2nd place at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Songwriting Contest with songs from this release. Through her music, Carolyn continues to explore the joy and pain found in life's small moments.
