Crucifer Biography 2024
Founded in 1990 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Crucifer is a death metal band consisting of three members: Stevie Snyder (bass), Brian Ronquest (guitar), and Jeff Riddle (vocals and drums). This original lineup has remained intact since the band's inception. Crucifer made their live debut on February 9, 1991, opening for Believer at Street Cry in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The performance was well-received, establishing a loyal following in their hometown.
Later that same year, Crucifer entered the studio to record their three-song cassette demo, Beyond The Realms. This raw recording garnered interest from Wild Rags Records in California, leading to its licensing and distribution. The demo quickly sold out and is now sought after by collectors. Following the success of the demo, the band began working on their first full-length studio album.
In 1991, Crucifer released Festival Of Death on Wild Rags Records, which became their most brutal album to date. The album achieved significant success, selling thousands of copies through mail order and live performances. The band frequently played alongside both local and national acts at venues such as Colonial Theatre in Fredericksburg, Newgate Prison in Richmond, Stingrays in Woodbridge, Zaxx in Springfield, Tiki Falas in Dumfries, and Benders Arena in Manassas, Virginia, as well as participating in death metal shows in Maryland. Festival Of Death marked a major underground success for the band.
In 1992, Crucifer released their first 7” vinyl record, Pray For The Dead, also on Wild Rags Records. This limited edition was pressed in both black and blue vinyl, with only 1,000 copies available. Following this release, the band began working on their second full-length album. In 1993, they released Pictures of Heaven on Wild Rags Records in CD and cassette formats. This album enjoyed considerable success and was well-received by the international metal community and underground fanzines, positioning Crucifer among the top-selling acts on Wild Rags alongside bands like Internal Bleeding, Impetigo, and Nuclear Death. The band expresses gratitude for the support they received from Richard C. at the label.
On July 31, 1993, Crucifer performed at the 7th annual Milwaukee Metal Music Mania, sharing the stage with acts such as Cannibal Corpse, Testament, and Clutch. This performance at The Rave in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, helped expand their fanbase. In 1994, they released a three-song EP titled Separation on Wild Rags Records, featuring more polished tracks that have remained fan favorites. However, as the band members pursued individual interests, they began to drift apart. Their last live performance to date took place on November 1, 1997, at Colonial Theatre in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with Transgression opening the show.
In 2016, Crucifer was approached by Dark Blasphemies Records in Spain to compile their back catalog into a two-CD set, Carrier Of The Cross. This collection included tracks from their albums, EP, 7”, and demo, along with three previously unreleased songs from the Beyond The Realms recording sessions. The CD featured 25 tracks and a 16-page colored booklet with lyrics, photos, and the band's history, with 500 copies produced, which have since sold out.
In December 2022, Crucifer self-released remastered editions of Pictures Of Heaven and Festival Of Death on CD, featuring bonus tracks from Separation and Beyond The Realms. These limited, hand-numbered editions included high-gloss decals. Around the same time, they were contacted by Pathologically Explicit Recordings in Indonesia to release 30th-anniversary vinyl editions of Pictures Of Heaven and Festival Of Death, with both albums set for release in late August/September 2023. The vinyl editions will feature POH on black vinyl and FOD on red.
In January 2024, Crucifer will release their first full-length album of new material in 30 years, titled Hell Is For The Hopeful. The album will be available in three vinyl color variants: Envy Green, Dropsy Blue, and Post Mortem Purple, each accompanied by a full-color lyric insert, posters, and decals. The CD edition will feature a full-sized jewel case, a 16-page full-color booklet, posters, and decals. The digital release is scheduled for January 12, 2024, with the 12 tracks being released weekly as videos. Jeff Riddle, the band's vocalist and drummer, has provided insights into the album's creation.
The making of Hell Is For The Hopeful was fraught with challenges, often feeling as if it were doomed to remain unfinished. Over the years, the album underwent multiple rounds of writing, re-writing, recording, and shelving. The lyrics, drawn from personal life experiences, explore themes of anxiety and depression, highlighting the highs of success and the lows of failure.
The album's title, Hell Is For The Hopeful, speaks to the pervasive nature of suffering. It reflects the reality that many face in a world filled with pain and hardship. The album resonates with those who have experienced or are currently experiencing their own struggles, serving as a reminder that, while hope is essential, the challenges of life are inescapable. The title suggests that for those who have known suffering, peace will eventually come, even as hope waits patiently for all.
