A Course of Action is an American rock band hailing from Connelly Springs, North Carolina. The band was established in 2000 by guitarist Jonathan Byrd and bass player Tony Hawkins, both of whom had previously played in the southern rock band Copperhead. Initially named "Hybrid," the group expanded its lineup by recruiting singer John Culberson and drummer Okey Parsons by 2003, subsequently embarking on the creation of their debut album.
The band's self-titled debut, "Hybrid," was released on November 7, 2004, through their independent label, Spire Records. This album, although released under the name Hybrid, marked the beginning of their recorded work. Two promotional singles emerged from this release: "Won't Be Long," which debuted in November 2004 prior to the album's launch, and "A Million Miles," released on April 14, 2005. The album was made available in limited physical quantities at live performances and through various digital platforms. It gained recognition on Altsounds's hard rock charts, where it achieved several #1 positions and garnered over 48,000 streams in 2005.
Following their debut, A Course of Action became a prominent presence in the Southeastern U.S. rock scene, frequently performing at venues across North Carolina, such as Legends in Morganton and Sgt. Pepper's in Hickory. Their tracks received airplay on local radio stations, including Charlotte's 106.5 WEND, and the band reached the semi-finalist stage in the 2005 Zippo Hot Tour. They also showcased at the Mid-Atlantic Music Conference, securing spots on various internet radio stations and compilation CDs.
Despite remaining unsigned, A Course of Action (still known as Hybrid at that time) returned to the studio in 2005 to record four new tracks for an upcoming EP titled "Now You See," which was released on January 2, 2006. Their dedication and hard work led to numerous supporting gigs for national acts and appearances at major music festivals alongside well-known bands such as Alter Bridge, Nickelback, Three Days Grace, and Hoobastank. However, in the summer of 2006, drummer Okey Parsons departed from the band, prompting the remaining members to revamp their identity. They brought in Greg Lucy as the new drummer and rebranded themselves as "A Course of Action," with their first release under the new name being the single "Move On" in November 2006.
In 2009, drummer Greg Lucy left the band, and his position was swiftly filled by J. T. Silvestri, who joined the group as they began work on their new album, "Dark Before The Dawn," released independently on May 1, 2011. Later that year, in December, bassist and founding member Taylor Hawkins announced his retirement from music, leading to Wes Johnson joining as the new bassist in 2012.
The band began collaborating with producer Beau Hill and signed with Star 1 Music Group in late 2012 and early 2013. Throughout mid and late 2013, they shared several new demos on their Reverbnation profile, allowing fans to familiarize themselves with the upcoming material before their sophomore album release. On May 2015, the band announced that their new album "Treason" would be released on June 8, 2015, via Star 1 Music Group, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. Three singles were launched from this album: "107," "Beautiful," and "Who We Are," the latter being the band's most successful track.
In May 2016, it was revealed that lead guitarist and founding member Jonathan Byrd, along with bassist Wes Johnson, would be leaving the band to pursue retirement or solo projects. Following this announcement, lead singer John Culberson and drummer J. T. Silvestri expressed their intention to continue the band and search for new members. As of 2025, nearly nine years after the announcement, the band has been inactive, with no updates on their social media since May 2016, suggesting that they are likely on an indefinite hiatus.
