Silent Civilian is a metalcore band that emerged from Los Angeles, California. Formed by frontman Jonny Santos in 2004 after his departure from the synth-metal band Spineshank, Silent Civilian was initiated as a fresh start, aiming to explore new musical directions. However, the band encountered challenges early on, including numerous lineup changes and a split from their initial label, Corporate Punishment Records.
In 2005, Silent Civilian signed with Mediaskare Records and released their debut album, Rebirth of the Temple, on May 2, 2006. The album received mostly positive reviews and has sold over 25,000 copies in the United States to date. Santos and the band continue to tour in support of the record, with aspirations of establishing themselves as a headlining act. The current lineup features Santos (vocals and guitar), Rudy "Fyto" Perez (guitar), and Stan Derby (bass), while drummer Chris Mora departed in late December 2007 for personal reasons.
Jonny Santos, recognized for his role as the vocalist and songwriter for the Grammy Award-nominated group Spineshank, felt dissatisfied with the musical direction of his previous band, believing it had reached its conclusion. After leaving Spineshank, he faced a period of uncertainty and hardship, including temporary homelessness, as he sought to define his musical path. During this time, he played with various local bands and engaged in studio production and engineering to make ends meet.
Determined to start fresh, Santos placed an ad for a drummer on MySpace. He received numerous responses, including an email from Chris Mora, who sent a drumming video that impressed Santos. Mora was invited to audition and was hired shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, Santos auditioned for an Australian band, Cryogenic, where he met bassist Henno. After Henno and another band, Mudrock, both experienced vocalist departures, he invited Santos to join. Ryan Ready, a longtime friend from high school, was brought in as the second guitarist. The band was initially named Silent Civilians, a title symbolizing the silence surrounding global issues.
In January 2005, Silent Civilians signed with Corporate Punishment Records to begin work on Rebirth of the Temple. However, by May, Santos announced their departure from the label for undisclosed reasons. Following discussions with several other labels, the band pushed their debut album release to late 2005 or early 2006. Recording took place at Undercity Recordings, with Logan Mader, former guitarist of Machine Head and Soulfly, handling production. The band also shortened their name to Silent Civilian.
In June 2005, guitarist Ryan Ready left for personal reasons unrelated to the band. Santos quickly sought a replacement and hired Tim Mankowski, a musician he had known for 15 years. In November 2005, the band signed with Mediaskare Records and aimed for a tentative release date of February 21, 2006. During this period, Santos and Mora collaborated on the songwriting process, creating around thirty songs, of which sixteen were ultimately recorded for the album. This included two covers of Slayer’s “War Ensemble” and Death Angel’s “Seemingly Endless Time,” although neither made it onto the final tracklist. The album runs for 64 minutes and features a video for the title track, as well as a ten-minute documentary detailing its creation.
Rebirth of the Temple was released on May 2, 2006. Reviewer Scott Alisoglu from Blabbermouth.net noted the album's mix of aggressive riffs and melodic elements, describing it as a strong debut despite not being a "grand slam." Other reviews praised the album, with Greg Maki of live-metal.net awarding it a perfect score and marking it as one of the top albums of 2006. By June 5, 2007, sales had reached 25,000 copies.
The music video for the single "Rebirth of the Temple," directed by Scott Culver, was filmed at Santos' childhood home and featured a gathering of friends and fans. Appearances were made by Wayne Static of Static-X and Roy Mayorga of Stone Sour. Following several lineup changes, including the departures of Tim Mankowski and Henno, the band continued to perform as a trio. Santos recruited guitarist Marcus Rafferty after meeting him on tour and brought in bassist Stan Derby to replace Disco Daylen after a month of live performances.
In a July 2006 interview, Santos shared plans for a tribute EP featuring covers of classic Bay Area music and expressed ambitions to solidify the band's position as a headlining act. On December 28, 2007, Chris Mora announced his departure from Silent Civilian, citing personal reasons.
