Carlos Méndez was born on October 13, 1964, in Maracaibo, Zulia state. He is the son of Ovelio Méndez and Gladys León, and the eldest of five siblings, which include Carlos, Mayra, Juan, and Mohana. He is married to Leyda Piña, a licensed professional.
Méndez began his journey in the world of gaita in 1979 as an instrumentalist with the group Gaiteros de Doña Margarita. In 1984, he joined the renowned ensemble Santanita as a soloist, where he recorded his first song, "Gaita Florida," written by Porfirio Acevedo. He remained with Santanita until 1986.
In 1987, the prominent gaitero Astolfo Romero invited him to join the newly established group Maragaita. His solo career commenced in 1989 with the song "El Compositor," composed by Wolfgang Romero and Leandro Zuleta. However, it was in 1991 that he achieved significant success with "Grito de Gloria," a work that earned him 42 awards, including Gaita del Año, Solista del Año, Conjunto del Año, and Compositores del Año.
This success initiated a prolific career with memorable songs such as "El Día que la Virgen Lloró," "Yo También Soy Zuliano," "Ancestros," "La Pintura," "Los Autores de la Grey," and "Esto es Decir Venezuela" (featuring Gilberto Santa Rosa), among many others.
Méndez continued with Maragaita until 1998. In 1999, he participated as a guest with various groups, achieving notable successes, including "La Felicidad Me Llegó de Paso" by Lenin Pulgar and "Amor y Gaita," which solidified his reputation again as Solista del Año.
In 2000, he officially joined the group Iluminación Gaita y Show, where he gained recognition with the song "La Gaita de las Hormigas." His time with this group lasted until 2001.
In 2002, he became a member of the group Somos, comprised of former members of Maragaita. Over five years (2002–2006), they became well-known for songs such as "El Taca Ta Taca," "Somos," "Pregón del Alma," "Déjala," "Cantar, Cantar," "Recordar es Vivir," and "Las Virutas."
In 2008, Méndez returned to Maragaita, this time as a shareholder alongside his close associate Javier León. They recorded songs like "Así es Maracaibo" by Neguito Borjas and "La Maracaibo del General" by Wolfgang Romero and Leandro Zuleta, remaining with the group until 2015.
That same year, he made a guest appearance with the group Somos, performing the song "Respeten Mi Gaita" by Reynier Villasmil, alongside Marcos Salas. The song resonated due to its thematic content.
In 2017, he joined the Mambo Gaitero group in Orlando, Florida, recording "Es Todo lo Que Quiero Hacer" by Jesús Salas, which earned him the Gran Chiquinquirá de Oro award for Gaita del Año Internacional.
Throughout 2018, he collaborated with various groups including Coco Gaita, Melizma, Hermanos Bermúdez, Gabana, Chiquinquireños, and Mambo Gaitero, particularly standing out with the song "He Dejado Todo Atrás."
In 2019, along with his wife, he decided to emigrate to the United States in search of better opportunities. Since then, he has been actively performing with Mambo Gaitero across various venues in the country. He also recorded "Vuelvo a Sonreír" by Jesús Salas, which received widespread acclaim.
In 2020, he collaborated with the group High Class to record "Señora Humanidad," composed by Joseito Rivero, which garnered recognition as Tema Mensaje del Año at the Chiquinquirá de Oro Awards.
In 2021, his voice resonated once more in Venezuela with "El Taca Ta Taca," again by Jesús Salas, reaffirming his relevance in the gaita scene.
In 2022, he formed an artistic alliance with Javier León and Luis Germán Briceño, resulting in the project La Trilogía Perfecta, which debuted with the song "Cuando Vuelva" by Luis Germán Briceño. This trio has performed in various cities across the United States, bringing their music to new audiences.
In 2023, they presented their musical project titled "Antorcha de Paz," alongside a compilation of hits from all three soloists, featuring Roberto González. This artistic collaboration has been showcased in multiple cities, further cementing Carlos Méndez's status as one of the most emblematic voices of gaita zuliana.
