Anne Cawrse (pronounced "course") is an Australian composer known for her contributions to acoustic solo, chamber, orchestral, and vocal music.
Her compositions are characterized by lyrical melodies, intricate rhythmic structures, and a rich harmonic language. Cawrse has a particular interest in exploring the expressive musical possibilities inherent in the works of female writers.
Born in the small rural town of Freeling in South Australia, Cawrse later relocated to Adelaide to study composition at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. She completed her PhD in Composition in 2008. Her talent for text setting has established her as the most commissioned composer for the Adelaide Chamber Singers and a highly regarded composer of art songs, with performances and recordings by notable artists including Greta Bradman, Lorina Gore, Emma Horwood, Kyle Stegall, Robert Macfarlane, Kate Macfarlane, Cheryl Pickering, and Bethany Hill.
Cawrse is recognized for her orchestral and chamber music compositions, receiving significant commissions from organizations such as the Adelaide and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, the Australian String Quartet, Plexus Ensemble, the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, the Benaud Trio, and the Zephyr Quartet. Her first opera, Innocence, was developed in collaboration with Singular Productions and the State Opera Company of South Australia, supported by an Arts SA Major Commission grant. The suite from Innocence premiered in June 2021 by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra during 'She Speaks,' a mini-festival curated by Cawrse that honored the lives and works of female composers.
Throughout her career, Cawrse has been a finalist in the Choral, Chamber, and Large Ensemble categories of the APRA/Australian Music Centre Work of the Year awards. In 2021, her piece A Room of Her Own won Chamber Work of the Year. That same year, she received the South Australian Luminary Award for her consistent contributions to composition and education. In 2022, she was awarded a Prelude Composer Residency, and her Cor Anglais Concerto, The Rest Is Silence, was a finalist for the prestigious Paul Lowin Orchestral Prize. Other accolades include the Albert Maggs Prize for Composition, the Bishop Memorial Commission, the Momentum III Covid-19 Sue W Special Commission, and the inaugural Women in Music commission.
Cawrse has engaged in meaningful collaborations, creating multiple works for Katie Noonan’s vocal quartet AVE, as well as collaborating with guitarist Alex Tsiboulski, pianists Michael Ierace, Stefan Cassemenos, and Leigh Harrold, the cello and guitar duo Sharon and Slava Grigoryan, and percussionist Claire Edwardes. A prominent figure in the new music scene in Adelaide, she appreciates the ongoing support from leading music organizations in her hometown. Alongside these collaborations, she has received numerous commissions from Various People Inc., frequently contributes to the chamber music programs of The Firm New Music Concert series, and is regularly featured by the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra. In 2023, Cawrse emerged as the most performed composer in Elder Hall’s lunch hour and evening concerts, with four of her works showcased by various ensembles and performers, including the Elder Conservatorium Wind and Symphony Orchestras, Kristian Chong and Simon Cobcroft, and the Seraphim Trio featuring guest soprano Lorina Gore.
In addition to her composing career, Cawrse serves as a casual lecturer at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide. She has tutored composition at various levels, including private lessons, tertiary education, and senior secondary education, and participated in the ASME Young Composer’s Program (2015) and the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Composition program (2021-2023). Outside of her professional pursuits, she enjoys a peaceful life by the beach with her husband Andrew and their son Oscar.
