Atlanta native DJ Buu has established himself as a prominent figure in the music scene, particularly recognized for his ability to select the perfect track at the right moment. His expertise in DJing combines both skill and timing, which has earned him the title of a Premiere Record Breaker at the renowned Magic City nightclub. “I put myself in the customer’s shoes,” he states, emphasizing his connection with the audience. “I know what sounds good and what they want to hear.”
DJ Buu's deep-rooted passion for music began in his youth, largely influenced by his mother, who frequently brought home new records. “She used to come home with new records every week,” he recalls, reminiscing about how he would scratch them on the record player, pretending to DJ. It was clear early on that he would pursue a career in music, and he soon began saving money to buy his own turntables.
By the time he reached high school, Buu was already entertaining his classmates at house parties, quickly developing a reputation as the go-to DJ for lively gatherings. He transitioned to performing at adult parties while still a teenager, earning money that he invested back into his DJ equipment and record collection.
His professional journey took off when he met KD, the owner of Toe Jam record store on Bankhead, who also worked as a promoter. “He basically took me under his wing and got me into the club scene,” Buu explains. After turning 21, he was hired at The Abbey in downtown Atlanta, where he initially played in the smaller VIP room. Despite the competing music from the radio station in the larger area, Buu drew crowds to his section and was eventually promoted to DJ for the main area, gaining greater recognition in the process.
Buu then enjoyed a four-year tenure at Center Court on Atlanta's Southside, owned by Mr. Big Time, known for the track “Check My Footwork.” “I loved that spot. Everybody came in there every weekend,” he reflects, before moving on to his current role at Magic City, where he has been a resident DJ for six years. His connection to the club began when he trained a DJ who later recommended him for a position. Initially, he held a temporary spot while also performing at venues like Platinum 21, Body Tap, and Mingles. His permanent role at Magic City was solidified after dancers requested his hiring from management. Throughout his time there, he witnessed both the club's rise to fame and his own career advancement. He credits his growth to collaborations with emerging DJs like Koolaid, Nando, and X-Rated, stating, “When I came in, they made me step my game up, step my mixes up, step everything up.”
One of the most fulfilling aspects of Buu's career is his ability to break records and assist in the development of new artists. “We give you real opinions,” he asserts. “If you bring us some bull, we gon’ let you know. If you bring us a hot song, we’re gon’ make it even hotter.” This collaboration with artists has not only enhanced his reputation but has also solidified his standing in his hometown.
As his name gains recognition, DJ Buu is focused on reaching a broader audience. He performs live on the internet and shares his mixes through podcasts available on iTunes. Due to the demand for his playlists, he is also working on mixtapes. In addition to his schedule at Magic City, Buu plans to perform at clubs in California and various locations around Atlanta.
Describing his lifestyle as exciting, DJ Buu has recently been invited to participate in a reality show titled Players Club. “I’m just very entertaining,” he laughs. “Every day is an adventure with me.”
